Without a hardness tester?

I dislike relying on the file method, because files are just too dang subjective. I have no idea how hard the files we have in the workshop are, and they vary substantially. Some skate over everything, some bite and rip through everything. I realize it's probably a feel thing with the files, but I don't have a clue what's what with this approach. I'm testing the file on the edge and spine/tang to see/feel/hear the contrast; just can't get the hang of it. Maybe my HT just failed this time and I'm overthinking it?:D

What are some of other possible methods? Thanks.

There are simple file test sets that you can buy, usually 4 or more files each marked with a specific RC hardness. My set was made by Tsubosan, contains 6 files, and is good for testing HRC40-65 .
