Testing of my stainless steels corrosion resistance.......

24hr test results of many stainless steels. All dipped in to home made salt water. Edit: I filled a glass full enough to cover the blade to the handle, then took the blade out, put about 2 table spoons of salt in it, then put the knife back in. Also all pitting and rust occurred so close to the salt that you can't use the arguement that the rust was spread out, it all occurred with about 1.5inches.

I have many different types of stainless steels now, and I wanted to do some testing. The main reason I did this is to know for myself what is really true versus the hype. If any of you think my test was unfair, explain why. I only used Salt to test corrosion, if there are other things in the wilderness/outside that you are likely to run into, then I would consider testing them as well.

Aus 8(KOA skinner) is the worst, had the most rust spots, and the worst pitting. For the purposes of explaining things easier I will rate Aus 8 as 100% pitting, and all other knives on that scale. There was a .25 wide inch spot of heavy pitting near the tip, spots all over the blade, and the least pitting occurred on the spine.
Wilderness use- While camping I got spots on it just from it being a little dirty from carving wood and being left outside the tent all night long.

ZDP 189(Spyderco Dragon Fly 2)
was the second worst, it actually had more pitting than I ever thought it would. 65% pitting, but the pitting was very small dots all over. The spine and tip had the heaviest.
Outside use- never had any issues, still haven't had any issues.

154 CM(Ontario BlackBird) had little rust, but more pitting than the VG 10. The rust rubbed off very easily. 7-8% pitting. This was very hard to call, between the VG 10, but after I did some sanding I realized there was more pitting than the VG 10.
Outside use- never had any issues, still haven't had any issues.

VG 10(Delica 4) had a lot of rust, but very small pitting. The rust rubbed off very easily. 5% pitting, was most noticeable towards the tip, and 3 very tiny dots on the spine.
Outside use- never had any issues, still haven't had any issues.

CPM S30V(Spyderco PM2)
had one small spot of rust and no pitting what so ever. 0% pitting
Outside use- never had any issues, still haven't had any issues.

Guys I apologize for not higher detailed pictures. When I took them you couldn't see any pitting in any of the knives and after I noticed it, I didn't think about taking pictures before I polished away the rust. On another note, I used a 220 grit drywall sponge And 0000 steel wool to buff the metal. Also that is Naval Jelly that just won't come off of my PM2
