Today I took the first step in becoming a Fire Lt. by taking the written exam. I have to admit that I was nervous because I didn't get to study as much as I wanted to. But, I feel that I did well and I will receive a passing grade which will guarentee that I will be able to take the oral scenario exam. Quite frankly this scares the piss out of me because I have never had confidence of speaking one on one with someone who was judging me. Gives me the willies. Just needed to share. :)

It usually bothers me, too. They aren't the enemy. They aren't better than you. They are the next step you take to be where they are.
Seems to me going into a burning building just might be a bit scarier, huh?
You'll do good. ;)

Right on, Ken!

Believe me, this oral is going to be easy, compared to the one you get when you go for Battalion Chief! (I almost barfed! )

The hardest thing you will have to adjust to is that as a LT, you'll have to seperate your friendships from your responsibilities as their supervisor. You will get attitude, hurt feelings, and resentment. You'll ask yourself if you made the right choice in going for the promotion (You did). Come to an understanding very early on, and use the advice I'm sure you received from your friend Capt. Bolcar. Reflect back on how he seperated and intertwined his captains duties with his friendships, and you'll have it licked.

Good luck.

Hey Ken, Congratulations, as far as the oral part  (sorry couldn't help myself) look at it this way, he's not judging you, he's evaluating your knowledge.

If your good at what you do,(which I'm sure you are) than don't sweat it you'll do fine.

I've given a thousand different tests in the past, ranging from HazMat to Basic First Aid and CPR, the things they look for are what ya know and how well you apply it and what type of leadership skills ya have. Dude it's in the bag.

Best of luck to ya.

ROTFLMAO
Gee...I'd think so...guess that's why I'm not a fireman. :D :D :D

Glad to hear that you may be moving up.

Congrats, Ken!...(Now, maybe one of these days, your Chief will let you drive one of those pretty red firetrucks, rather than just letting you wash it.:D.).

hey ken..best of luck..

with regards to the oral part of the exam. Start the exam by walking in..flick a ciggy in thier face and scream...in your best joisy accent..

Oh yeah..wanna take dat outside???

no seriously..I would just admit to the judges that your nervous right of the bat..they probably have seen nervous candidates all the time..you will do fine..

One method of overcoming your apprehension is to have people quiz you in a similar situation/environment that you would experience in the actual, oral, test.

You’ll do fine.

Good luck, Ken. Just keep confident (easier said than done, I know :D ). But your confidence will show decisiveness and I'm sure that's something they're looking for.

Good on ya, Ken. Keep a confident outlook. Evaluators usually start the same as all of us. Some day you'll be sitting on that board. Go make us all proud! :)

I was going to make an "oral exam" joke, but I see that about 15 people have beaten me to it.

So ... I'll just wish you good luck, Ken. With regard to the oral exam, do you remember that old public speaking trick of imagining your audience naked, so as to buck up your courage? Well, don't do that. It'll gross you out. Try imagining that your examiners are all carrying POS Chinese Spyderco knock - offs. That'll make you feel superior and give you the moral high ground. :D

No good. He's already got all of them carrying Rescues.

Even better! They're now in his debt, and will be anxious to repay the favor ... :D
