Tether your knife for stream or boat fishing?

I usually carry a nice folder when fishing. I use bright colors in case I drop it in the drink. But in a boat, it would be pretty much gone if you dropped it. Do you attach your knife to yourself? What do use? Paracord? How long? Does it get in the way?

Just wondering.

I tend to carry cheaper priced knives in the boat such as a Mora, Gerber LST and Kershaw. I don't carry the knives on a lanyard and only have lost one SAK and one Gerber in several decades of fishing.

My scissors/nippers (used for cutting line) are kept on a retractable unit on my fishing vest so it is secure.

It's either in my hand or in the sheath, so I don't tether.
Not a bad idea, but in a kayak especially, I don't want the extra cordage.

On the boat I use inexpensive knives like the CRKT M.U.K. Great for cutting line, bait, and even filleting. No lanyard as it sits on the floor or in my pocket. If it goes in the drink I'm out like $10. BUT...what I do is put a lanyard on my fishing rig , just above the finger post and then around the wrist. It doesn't interfere with fishing ( strapped on my non-crank hand) and saves my rig if it comes out of my hand. I've had friends accidentally "throw" their rods in the lake...the last guy was out $250

Love the knife Guyon.
A lot of people hear like Benchmade knives. I have never cared for them from an aesthetics point of view. Either I don't like the blade or the handle isn't to my liking, until NOW. I like that knife alot; added to my wish list. Nice pics. Thanks

I wear a small kneck knife when in my canoe and my folder in my pocket (clip).

I don't like the idea of tethering a knife - too much of a risk of it swinging free and cutting into something/someone. I carry nothing but cheap "gimme" knives on my kayak and when fishing from shore, if using a good knife, I use it over dry land or in very shallow water.

I carry a SAK and if I loose it, I loose it. But it would be rather easy to tether with the ring.

I use paracord and make a long lanyard and tie it to my belt loop. That way i have plenty of slack to use the knife, but if I drop it, I just reel it back in. Have used this in the ocean, pool, climbing Dunn's river falls, kayaking, etc.

I have to agree with the Biscuit Whisperer, I too like to kayak and hike and have found that a long loop hangs and snags on every dang thing I walk past...and with my luck if I "dump" (aie roll, fall out of kayak or otherwise slip and fall in the water) the one twig or ancient trotline with hook capable of holding me under the water will reach out and get me. :) I use a short lanyard, only long enough to fit over the pinky and ring finger. I also demand absolute security from my sheath's. Even going so far as to add extra retainer straps or building full coverage calvary type sheaths to insure the knife stays in there.
