Hey fellas,

I had no idea where else to put this, and since it is an urban gadget and piece of gear about 99% of us carry on a daily basis, it seems like this would be the place to post this.

I was bored this morning and sort of lounging about until my afternoon shift at work starts later today and discovered an app that allows me to tether my Android G-1 to give my laptop internet!!!

This has to be the greatest discovery to modern man :D My phone has great service as it is, and a huge screen for a phone, but having it link up with my laptop now allows me to do a lot more when I'm away visiting family on weekends and such (and the holidays coming up). It was a process that took about 30 minutes to figure out, but it was worth it and completely free to download. I actually unplugged the ethernet cord and stuck in the USB (which is attached to my phone) and am using it right now. It runs in the background of your phone so it:

1. Gives you internet
2. doesn't cost a dime unlike those USB plug ins that the cell providers try to sell you (about $20+ per month) as long as you have an unlimited data plan which all PDA/smartphones are required to have anyways.
3. Charges your phone while it's plugged into the computer/laptop
4. is just plain bad ass :p
5. still allows you to use your phone 100% while giving you internet

If you have an ancient PC/laptop that doesn't do wireless, this seems like it would work and be a simple solution. I don't want to sound like an advertisement, but in this day and age, this seems really interesting and thought you guys would want to know (if you have never heard of it). It's something we all carry anyways, so why not take advantage of it? :)

Anybody else use/try this? Thoughts, input, trial and error?

Sounds pretty cool, I am about ready to get rid of my dinosaur phone and upgrade. I plan on getting one that can do that.

I've done it with my iPhone. It's also called "Tailing."

I just got a 3Gs. Can you tell me more about how to do this? Do I have to jailbreak first? Will this work with my wife's 3G?

Hey CM, here's the site that my phone app led to from the android market:

Yours would be the iPhone link. I hope this helps, it keeps things free so you don't have to get one of those usb/wifi routers for your laptop. It explains how to install it on your phone so that you can then upload it to anything you plug it into for the future (like a friends laptop or visiting a hotel without internet connection).

Since I live in the boonies, I'm on Edge a lot and my computer loads pretty quickly unless I'm on youtube which would be normal anyways if I was just using my phone. In 3G and wifi areas it's just like having your pc set up to a high speed network and video streaming and such run perfect. There's several ways to tether, but this is the one that worked for me :)
