The last time I reviewed the Texas law on carrying a knife, it said you can't carry a dirk, dagger, or stiletto at all, and a fixed blade knife with a blade over 5 1/2" on your person when not on your own property unless you're hunting or it's in conjunction with your work. It never said anything about a bowie or other type of knife besides the aforementioned blades. Has to do with stabbing more than anything. It has been a while since I read the law and it could have changed.
That length is correct. The Texas penal code says that you can't carry a fixed blade knife with a blade longer than 5 1/2". That's fine, we all know what a BLADE is, right? Well, it seems that the Texas Supreme Court does not. Several years ago they ruled that a blade measurement was from the point to the BUTT end of the handle, or what we'd all call the overall length.
And as for switchblades, you can own one in Texas if it's a "collectable or curiosity". No one can carry one in Texas unless you are a cop or in the military AND you are on duty. That would include those old orange handled Camillus pilot's knives with the spear point blade and a line hook, but probably not anything else.
By the way, Ray, that is a nice knife. Very much your style.
