texas senate cleared the way for citizens to shoot feral hogs from helicopters. do'nt really think this will do much for the problem since not many people fly helis & also heli operation is so expensive that only a few texans will actually participate.--dennis

Now that sounds like a Business Op....

Anyone got a Helicopter and Pilot handy??

Hell--I would pay to be taken up and fire off a few rounds..

I'm sure most of you would as well....

Yup, totally agree Dennis, most likely a senator making new rules for a buddy or two.
Friend of a friend says every time a helo goes by "there goes $2000 every 20 minutes", apparently his friend has a helo and once figure out the cost on a per minute basis...$100, ouch.

There's going to be a lot of winged piggies hopping around Texas by the look of things - unless people are going to be firing RPGs

Just use a 7.62 Gatling !! The damage by feral pigs is $400 million per year. They ought to use them as military training targets.

They ought to shoot them on the ground and feed the less fortunate.

I don't shoot it unless I am going to eat it.....to many people in this world going hungry to shoot just to kill for the thrill.

for those that do'nt shoot unless they are going to eat it--would you eat the outlaw you shot kicking in your front door? --dennis

Well, Dennis, I never thought of that..its a bit gross, but what the hell. Long pig block party, down Houston way.....LOL.
Interesting law to be passed..seems like a good way to make some money though. I bet lots of folks with disposable incomes will go out for a day and have a blast! For those that have never lived in an area overrun with a feral pest, I bet it seems a bit over the top...but man, after living in central Texas...hogs are EVERYWHERE!

Not only do most people not have the funds to hunt from helicopters, but most people do not possess the skill to shoot from a moving platform- me included. If I had the money to spend $100 per minute hunting hogs from the air, I sure as heck would NOT use that money to hunt hogs from the air...

We know what Ted Nugent will be doing with all of his free time...(not that he wasnt doing this already).

It sounds like a blast, though. I would love to do that!

As someone who lives in "hog land" (TX) I agree that the feral porkers need to have their numbers culled and controlled. BUT IMHO THIS is NOT a good idea. Allow me to tell you a little true story. A few years back while hiking in/on public land, in the midst of a serene river bottom oak flat, I and my young(er) sons found ourselves in the middle of a scene from a bad war movie...Yes, Long bursts of full auto rifle fire(notice I didnt say assault rifle :)), chunks flying out of the trees, dirt spraying up. a real HOLYF*CKINGSH*T!! moment. Some local men and land owners had decided to use their legally owned full auto AK's and SKS's and ATV's to run down and destroy some hogs that were damageing their cattle fields (Which they have every right to be POed over.) BUT firing full auto over the handlebars of a moving ATV is a good way to NOT hit your target! hence the flying tree chunks, chopped up dirt and poop filled underwear of yours truly. Now I can only assume that a moving helicopter provides only a marginally better shooting platform than a moving ATV AND I assure you a wounded/winged pig is a hellva lot more dangerous critter than a non injured one. So IMHO a person who has the wealth to hire a heli and goes about attempting to hit a moving creature from a moving platform is a person with no regard for the game he hunts nor his fellow man. If I hear a heli and shots fired I will find the most solid object I can and do my best to crawl under it...call it "Lesson Learned". My .02 rant over...now back to our regular and much more fun programing! :)

If she's wounded and cute absolutely! If you hit both knee caps you wouldn't even have to tie her to the bedposts.

This is one of those times when admittedly, I should keep my mouth shut. But... Instead of taking a post; opinion, or life philosophy, completely out of context--why not take the time to explain the situation more?

Obviously, anyone without a feral hog problem is not going to understand the situation as well as someone who is affected by the infestation. If people understand why "x" isn't happening ("x" being the eating of said feral hogs) then they'll have a different perspective and they'll be less likely to post the same thing over and over. People who are never given the opportunity to learn seldom do.

I understand that sometimes things, for a variety of reasons, aren't always feasible. If someone makes a decent effort to try and use what they can when they can I think it's very admirable. Do I think it's wasteful to shoot "food" animals and not try and use the meat? Yes. Do I care enough to chastise people? Nope. Will I respect the people who give it an honest try? Absolutely.

Your mileage may vary.

Well around here it works. Gov't trappers have a heli they can use too. About one mile from our last ranch they shot 253 hogs in two days from a heli.

many people do'nt understand that all hogs shot are an easy delicious meat are uninformed. boars that have'nt been castrated certainly require more prep than the average citizen can perform. i eat the sows up to 150 lbs & leave the rest to natures own elimination process. by letting the buzzards ,yotes, possoms, & other hogs to do the cleanup we are not wasting the animal , we are putting the energy back in natures system. individuals that do'nt have crops tore up & fences busted can preach all the ethics they wish but they are'nt doing the work , paying the bills, & feeling the kick in their wallets.--dennis

253 dead hogs in one day would be quite a bit for nature to absorb. I think the farmers could hunt the population into balance or invite others to on their land.

As much as it may dismay PITA, every living thing gets eaten period. People seem to think that if a human doesn't eat it that it goes to waste. Total nonsense. Scavengers, insects, worms, bacteria and then the plants. Nothing in nature is wasted. I have no interest in killing for fun but I don't think these ranchers are doing it for fun. More to protect their livelihood.
