I have been playing Texas Hold 'Em online for a couple of weeks, for Play Money only. I've taken the $1000 I started with and run it up to over $20,000. Now I know these play money games aren't the perfect preporation for a real money game, but there are things you can learn. You can learn to be patient and wait for the right starting hand, when to hold'em and when to fold 'em. I don't win every hand, but I'm making very few bad calls at this point, and I plan to get a lot better.

I'm wondering if I can have similar results playing for real money. I mean if I can start with $100 and play that up to $1,000 or $2,000 a month I would be a very happy camper. I know it's gambling, but with my tight-aggressive style of play I don't see a lot of risk.....But I could use some Input?

What do you think and what do you know?

There is two key rules with gambling: 1) don't gamble money you can't afford to loose.

So, if you have $100 that you wouldn't mind loosing, that you might otherwise blow on some other form of entertainment, then go for it.

And

2) Don't throw good money after bad. Set yourself a limit. If you loose your initial $100, then it's time to quit. Do so. It's to easy to say, "If I just take this other $100 that I have, I can use it to get back my other $100 and then go on to big bucks." Make a committment to yourself not to do this, to stop if the original $100 is lost. You can come back later when you've got a new $100 disposable money.

When you play against others for real money you will find that they all play a tight low-risk game. It will be a lot harder to win consistently than it is for play money. You should give it a try and see how your style of play works against the real playahs. Set yourself a limit and stick to it.

Good luck!

I do appreciate the advice and it sounds good, but I would like to know if you folks are Players?

I need to know at what stakes I can expect to make $100 a day?

I don't play but I work with a guy that does. He's a tight player. He knows when to be aggressive and when to be passive. He plays at local casino's and does quite well when he does. He's just started playing for real money online after playing for the play money for quite some time to get the feel of it. He's now playing in the lower $ tourniments. He'll make more online than he will doing his real job (dishwasher) sometimes. He can win 50-100 a night after getting home from dishwashing. Most tourniments he'll win...most of the others he'll finish in the top three at least. Remember this is at low $ pots. (less risk), late night (not every player is at their best then, but he is ,due to his work schedual). the lower $ player are willing to take more risks with their money...he doesn't, he plays every hand to get the most out of it.

Set your limit and go have fun. Let us know how you do.

Tom, if you can ask him at what stakes he plays for? This is the game I'm looking for to start, $50 to $100 a night.

I do know that you can't count late hours as a tactic, online poker is world-wide so you'll always be playing someone who is wide awake.

1. Read some books first.I enjoyed James McManus' book "Positively Fifth Street".Doyle Brunson's "Super/System'',considered the bible of poker, has recently been revised, T.J.Cloutier has a book out & Caro's book on poker "tells" should be read.

2.See "Tilt" the first season,now on D.V.D.

3.Females are equals to men,in hold 'em.Annie Duke won a 2 million dollar
tournament, knocking out her own brother,Howard Lederer,at the final table.

4.In my last 2 games,i lost to Alexandra Lewis. We used monopoly money,
and i lost everything. To make matters worse, Alexandra never read a book,
or saw hold 'em on t.v. She is my 5 year old granddaughter.

Your buddy,Norm.

I'm a Hold 'Em player I can tell you not to expect to win every time you play. While playing at a table in a casino I didn't get a decent starting hand in over three hours, I'm talking about not seeing an ace or a face card.

To answer your question about stakes, it depends on what you want to play. Do you play limit or no-limit?

The limit that you play at doesn't depend on how much you want to win but on how much you have to play with. If you play a limit game you want to buy in for 20 times the big bet, and show up with 50 times the big bet. If you play a 3-6 limit game you want to buy into that game with $120, but you want to show up with $300. For a no-limit game I like to buy in for the maximum amount but carry five times that amount.

Hey Norm, how are you? I've been doing some reading I started with Phil Helmuth's book "Play Poker Like the Pros". I will get to some of the others. Have you seen any of the E-books on Texas Hold 'Em are any of them worth the price?

Mere Mortal, I don't expect to win every time. My goal is to start with $100 and get it up to $1000 for the month. I have only played a Limit game and that's what I'll probably stay with. Using your numbers as a guide and starting with $100 I should be looking for a $1- $2 stakes game. Is that right?

PhilL,

I'll tell you what...Why not just send the $100 to me each time you feel a need to lose that $100...I could really use it and you won't feel so bad by losing it to strangers.:D.

I have been playing Texas Hold'Em on line for a while. I too won playing for fun. Playing for real money is a different ballgame entirely. Unless you got a lot of money to burn I would advise against it. I lost a $2000.00 pot with aces up full house to 4 nines. If you want to play your better off in a casino then on line.

Folks I think advising somebody not to gamble is good advice, it's what a friend should do. I come from a family of gamblers and my father tried from a very early age to steer me away from that life. I don't believe in gambling, I do however believe in taking calculated risks. I believe in learning as much as you can, practice as realistically as possible, learn from your mistakes and keep your risk down. I don't know if I can do it, but I think the risk maybe worth the reward. I'd like to find out.

If there are any real players with advice or certain pitfalls to look out for I'd really appreciate hearing about it.

TIA

Phil.......Did you ever think of this. While playing on line with 6 people, three know each other. They can't see your two whole cards but can communicate with each other on the phone while playing. They know each others cards and can get together with raises to squeeze you. They have a tremendous advantage over you this way and unless you get great cards you have no chance.

Larry, it probably does happen and if I get in a game like that I'll lose my $100 pretty quick and be out of it. There's a saying, "If you can't spot the sucker in your first half hour at the table then you are the sucker."

Of course there are going to be sharks out there, I think I can make some money off some of the suckers. ;)

Phil.....Who are you thinking of playing with? Also you have to set up an account with a middle man so to speak to deposit cash. There are vigs on that. Credit card companies and banks won't let you deposit directly into gambling companies.

youve learned how to hold em and when to fold em..but the question I have for you is..

Have you learned when to walk away and when to run?
Have you learned never to count your money while sitting at the laptop?
is there time enough for counting when the dealings done?? :) :D

Larry, I haven't setup an account yet, but I probably will with Neteller or Firepay. The different online poker rooms offer bonuses when you sign on that should more than make up for the fees of the account. Another concern is the Rake the amount the casino takes out every hand. I'm not sure at what stakes the % of the rake is the best value? My guess is that it's the highest at the lower priced games. That's where most beginners start, but I think the idea is to get to the higher priced games as fast as you can. Also the quality of the play goes up with the higher dollar players, meaning more predictable.

I just played an hour session, normally I would win 3 or 4 hands out of the 40 or so dealt. I just won 10 hands out of the 40 and went over $30,000 (in play money). I think I can do this.

Phil.......First of all the most rake they can take out is $3.00 per game, so the higher price games are better . But in the higher price games they get you with the blinds. As far as playing with play money as opposed to real money you will quickly see how different you play. Also I would try to play with six people not ten. You should watch them play $1 & 2 or 2 & 4 for a while so you can get a feel for it. Good luck and let us know how your doing.
