My somewhat shifty stepson just hit on us to send him $300 to make his Ford suv street legal. It is a 2004 Excursion .

Screwed us again ? ?

Uncle Alan & Aunt Patrica would like to know, please.

Did he say it was all for fees? Or is some of it for repairs the car needs to pass inspection?

It sounds to me that he needs to pay a sales tax or get insurance.

The annual license fee for a passenger car, city bus, or private bus shall be based on the manufacturer’s model year or weight in pounds, as the
case might be, of the vehicle as follows:
MODEL YEAR OR WEIGHT IN POUNDS FEE
2004 AND OLDER MODELS.................................................. $40.80
2005, 2006 AND 2007 MODELS ............................................ $50.80
2008 AND NEWER MODELS................................................. $58.80
6,001 LBS. AND OVER........................................................... $25.00 PLUS 60¢ CWT PLUS 30¢
(irrespective of model year)
The weight of any passenger car for purposes of registration shall be the weight generally accepted as its correct shipping weight plus one
hundred pounds. “Passenger Car” as defined by law means any motor vehicle other than a motorcycle, or a bus transporting persons for
compensation or hire, designed or used primarily for the transportation of persons.

There is also a local fee of $10-15 or so. Someone from Tejas can be more specific for you.

Tax, title, tags, and fees calculator

Not sure how to figure out your tax, title, and tags fees? You're not alone—every state has different rules and regulations for fees when you buy a vehicle. Select your state and vehicle price range below, and our tax, title, tags, and fees calculator will help you get an estimate before you buy.

Or call the Texas DMV with your questions.

Could there be excise tax he has to pay off? In Massachusetts if the state claims you owe excise tax on some other vehicle (one you got rid of years ago, usually) they won't let you register any vehicle until you pay that back bill. At best you can get them to return that money later -- you still have to pay all the excise tax they claim you owe no matter how obvious it is that you don't owe it before they'll let you register your current car.

It costs more the very first time. Did he just move here? or is it a renewal?

IIRC -- the Excursion is over 6000 pounds. He may also need a $40 state inspection and sticker....or, if he's not a trustworthy person, he may just have run out of weed.

No excise tax.
