This one was made by Joseph Westby and has the name of a steel maker on the blade. Perhaps it was an promotional item or a special gift made for an executive. The metal bit at the end is a little unusual. It slides in and out but doesn't seem to do anything . Then I recently saw another old smokers knife that had a fold-out tamper. Just a hypothesis, but once there may have been a disc that swivelled. When the metal bit is in the position shown in the photo, the disc would have extended across the butt of the knife. Not sure if that made sense or if I am even on the right track. It could be for some other attachment or maybe a locking mechanism of sorts. If the latter, it doesn't work. Hopefully, someone will be able to help. Thanks in advance.

Very nice knife, you seem to have the rare and old hard to find knives. No wonder you are smiling.

Thanks,
John

Yes, I'm pretty sure that the attachment was for a swiveling disk pipe tamper -- when not in use the disk would have laid flat at the side, covering the slot and attachment mechanism. Does the mechanism slide all the way forward in the slot (or nearly so)? How you have it in the pictures is about how it would have been positioned to enable the disk to swivel over to cover the butt of the knife.

You guys are right on about the tamper. I used to have the exact some knife with a different name on the blade and checked hard rubber handles. If it was as nice as this one I probably would have kept it.

Thank-you for your replies and the valuable information. Yes zerogee... this is in the out position. I does slide all the way in until the raised part meets the pearl. Thanks again to all for your help and positive feedback.

If I'd read your original post more carefully, I could have just said "that's right, that's what it was for".

Does s-k have the finest examples of pearl smoking knives or what?!!

Thanks for sharing this one my friend!
