Textured vs. smooth reflector?

Whats the difference between a smooth and textured reflector in a flashlight? Thanks.

a smooth reflector gives greater beam distance / lighting ability (throw ) while a textured reflector gives a smoother beam pattern and wider hotspot for closeup work.

A textured refelector is supposed to give a smoother beam, whilst a smooth one offers more throw.
