Ok, folks, which of you are hoarding Thad's knives? I friend told me to call Thad and order a knife or two and I find out he's got a three year wait! I was lucky and did acquire a beautiful hunter last week but I don't see any for sale and I don't see him being talked about here.

Thad's been making knives for 21 years and recently retired and gone full time. He's had Bill Harsey, Bob Lum and Ron Lake help him out. Not bad company. Thad was featured in the Feb issue of Blade and has won numerous awards in Oregon and at Blade West.

Let me know if any of you are familiar with his knives. By the way he's a pleasure to talk to.

I just received a knife from Thad and I had Coop do the photo. I also picked up another knife at the ECCKS a few weeks ago. He is doing some really nice work.

Win i dont have any of Thads knives. But do have a hunter on order with him.
He quoted me a lead time of 24 mos.and locked me in at his current pricing.I placed the order on a recommendation from Bill Harsey.

When i talked to Thad he felt the recent article in Knives Illustrated contributed to a large increase in orders and lead times. That's a great looking hunter with nicely matched stag.Whats your opinion on the fit and finish?

cmon guys Shhhh please ;-}
and 2toes you know where to send that skinner

I saw the article in KI and thought the work looked really clean. I also saw a couple of knives at ECCKS and again was impressed.

However, I am just not a "hunter" guy in general. Now if he only made a fighter or dirk...

I have shot two of his pieces. The one above, and this one, which won a 'Best of' award at another show.

It's no wonder he is backlogged. Really clean.

Very nice looking knives. The Sambar stag handles are excellent.Does Mr Buchanan put a really sharp edge on his blades?.How would you rate his leather sheaths.
Win thanks for the pictures and info on a knife maker I had not heard of before.I like the looks of his knives.
Coop,in your opinion, where is Mr Buchanan, among the better makers, whose work you have handled and photographed?.

I've only held two hunters to offer a guide. Both of them were as beautiful and cleanly made as the photos show. Top-grade F&F.

The sheaths have been clean and well made, but nothing especially remarkable about them (no tooling, etc.). Then again, there are no flaws and that alone is notable.

My wish is the same as others: Thad needs to make something other than hunters!

He looks too young to have retired and been making knives for 21 years!

Glad to see a few others that appreciate Thad's work. I know that Thad is working on some other styles. Stay tuned it may not be too long.

Thad and I had back to back tables at the last Chicago Custom Knife Show, so we had a chance to visit a bit. His work is impeccable, and he's a good guy.

Which issue of KI carried the article about Mr Buchanan. Also has anyone used one of Mr Buchanan's knives ?.If so would like to hear your impression about it.
