Thai Folders

More and more I'm seeing some really fancy knives, mostly on ebay, with Damascus blades, scales of exotic materials, etc out of Thailand. Have you seen any of these close up? I'm wondering how their quality ranks compared to our domestic makers. Not interested in one myself, just thinking their prices may eventually hurt sales of established makers if the quality is there.

No personally but I've had folks tell me that bought them that they were happy with them. Some of the craftsman there are top notch. They tend to copy some other peoples hard work though and thats what to watch out for I'd say. I've seen some 'Rock Lobster' and other copies of folders designed by folks here and even folks from Germany made for half the price or a 1/3rd the price by makers there and stuff like that.

Yun of www.yunaknives.com is a Thai maker and is making a knife that is gaining a lot of favor here in the USA. There are three different folders in this series, differ in the blade shapes, called the Hard Series. Big framelocks with ZDP-189 steel sandwiched between two layers of ATS-34. I'm in the process of trying to order a Hard3 myself. Check them out!:D:thumbup:

I've read some very favorable things in the forum about the Yuna knives. I'd like to check one out someday. But, my next knife is coming from Steve...eventually. ;)

If you haven't read this already, here's a link to a really nice review on them done by fishface5.

In fact, I bought the one he's talking about. It's really nice and the quality is surprising (considering the cost). I'm not saying it's on the level of a Todd Davidson or your higher end production folders but at a 3rd or 4th the cost. It's well worth the money IMHO.

I saw some of those knives your asking about. They might be well made but they all seem to be knock off's of other makers. I saw in one ebay sale they even admitted copying a well know makers design.

just remember you get what you pay for.

Well, last week I bought a Sebenza with Desert Ironwood inserts and Steve is presently making me an Ouperator. That should give you a pretty good indication of how I feel on the subject. :)
