As I have been reading as many threads as possible, Thamar (as well as several other names) keeps popping up -- associated with very magnificent weapons produced. Not only do they appear to be well-made, the designs vary and Thamar seems able to put sort of a personal touch on each piece he makes (a style so to speak, not just his maker mark etched into them.) In one earlier post I found a photo of him; he appeared to be in his thirties and the description said that he had served as an assistant (perhaps understudied is a more correct term) to Bura. Does anyone have any additional info on Thamar? Town of birth? When he arrived to HI, etc.?

Any info would be well-appreciated.

He seems also to be one of perhaps just a few makers who can pull off a Tin Chirra, which looks like it defies the laws of physics to make!!

Thanks so much. French

Thamar is fairly recent, he came about the same time as Purna. I don't know much besides his blades are fantastic pieces for both work and viewing. I've got a replica of a Mk. 1 Pattern from WW1 made by Thamar that by far is my favorite working khukuri, it takes and holds an edge like you wouldn't believe and nearly cleaved through 1" alder saplings in one swing. All of his blades tend to be on the lighter side (which is perfect for pack khukuris). At 18" and 22 oz it sure out performs it's weight.

A little over a year ago, Yangdu wrote this about the "new kami Thamar Bahadur":

"Years ago [at the] beginning of Birgorkha shop, Thamar Bahadur work with Bura Kami as a helper and he learn how to make good Khukuri from Master Kami Bura."

I didn't find any earlier mention of him in the HI forum archives. Seems that the names of the helpers/apprentices weren't mentioned unless they "graduated" to being a full-fledged kami at HI.
