First off, Congratulations to your son on his first deer. I can remember my first one over 25 years ago, memories of father and son that will last a lifetime.
As for the Ubejane. I have found it to be the BEST Hunting Knife I have ever used. Over the years, I have tried many different styles both folders and fixed alike. I have used Buck, Gerber, Schrade, Western, Kershaw, Puma, Custom Hunting Knives that I used to make..etc. Once I discovered Chris Reeve, I began using some of his designs. I used the Sable IV and it was excellent as well. Then the next year, I stumbled on a like new/used Ubejane and it has been perfect. We field dressed and skinned and quartered 3 whitetails during the first week of the huting season with the Ubejane before it began to lose its hair shaving edge. After a few swipes on the sharpmaker, it was back to its hair shaving edge. Field dressing was a breeze as its not super pointy, which is a great aide. The blade itself is of a skinner profile, but I have found it to work perfectly with everything I have thrown at it. I have also used it to chop down some saplings to help clear a shooting lane. I have used it the past 2-3 years and you can bet it will be on my belt again this season.
