Memorial Day thoughts.

Sometimes, we can lose track of who, and what is important in our lives. :o

I just wanted to express my gratitude to all the Veterans who participate in this Forum.

I wholeheartedly agree!

We forget why we have the traditional summer kickoff weekend when everyone goes camping, boating, swimming, and drinking!

We are able to do those things because of the many who offered the greatest sacrifice to our country.

Thank you from the Vet side of the house!

Without the support of the people who depend on us to do our job, we would not be here today.

S/F,
CEYA!

Thanks for voicing this Peter. Like Don posted, well said. There are some folks here who have put a great amount of their lives in defending what we enjoy and should not take for granted. That goes for all who have served in defending freedom around the world no matter what country they serve.

People who enjoy that freedom around the world do so only because their are people who have answered the call to defend and protect that freedom.

From those of us who are veterans of the Armed Forces of the Great United States, it is not about the living, it is about those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Memorial Day is a day to reflect on the costs that have been paid by Service Members, their friends and families who bear the cost of that loss, in order for our daily business to continue.

Memorial Day is not a joyous day, but a day for deep reflection, and thoughts of those that have gone past. Memorial Day always reminds me of the end of "Saving Private Ryan" when Ryan breaks down, telling his wife that he "tried to be a good man", remembering all those lives lost in protecting his.

So while you are all enjoying a well deserved day off from work, barbecuing, cleaning the house, drinking martinis, try to keep a little of these thoughts in mind. We may very well be repeating the mistakes of the past, or we may not.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

I am reminded of Robert (Bob) Horrigan. John, his twin brother, had the table next to mine at the Blade show two years ago, and since they are identical twins (minus some facial hair), Bob could cover John's table while John was wandering around the show and almost no one could tell. Since Bob was a knifemaker in his own right, he could carry on a conversation about John's knives and no one even noticed. I talked to Bob a lot at the show that weekend, about knives and about his job. He was a Master Sergeant in the Army, and was a real career military guy. He loved what he did, but didn't brag about it, and I found him to be inspiring, as most military guys are to me, because they go where we would run from; not because of the love of death, but a love of the life we live back here.

Bob was killed last year in Iraq as he was breeching the door of a weapons cache. He and his second in command died instantly, and as his brother John said, "Two warriors got to make the trip together."

Like Steve said, Veterans Day is for Veterans. Today is for those who did not make it home. They gave all they had so we could BBQ or go to the lake today. Remember their families today.

Thank you guys.
