It's been a long last few weeks here in Kenya. The elections came and everyone was on edge over that. We had gunfire right outside our compound for a few days. Needless to say, it's been a long few weeks. We are thankful that the elections are over and all is safe and sound again in Eldoret. Because of the elections, the mail slowed down almost to a complete stop, so nothing coming in or going out. I was so happy today to find a package I have been expecting for a while now from Carl aka Jackknife. In it was the famous Opinel #7.

To say the least, this came as a breath of fresh air. The knife is amazing. I was unsure how to judge the size by looking at online pictures and I think its a perfect size for edc. It's hair popping sharp and looks beautiful too. My wife even said it was a "cute" knife. Now this is the first time she has complimented ANY of my knives, including customs that I paid an arm and a leg for before leaving home....haha.

I said all that to say this....thank you Carl. You made my month and maybe even my year with this knife. I will carry it and treasure it and most of all, use it. Here are some quick shots I took of it after a days usage.

Great knife from a great guy! I like the little changes he made to it. You're going to love using it!

Looks like Carl gave you a little bit of a drop point to the blade - a common mod that a lot of people like. I'm also guessing that he may have refinished it (maybe with something clear to help waterproof?), since the logo is no longer on the handle. I like it better than stock, actually. Carl knows his Opinels.

Hey there, Caleb, I'm glad the knife got to you. I did drop the point a bit, something I do to all my Opinels. I like a slimmer blade point profile. And I idid some light sanding with 500 paper on the handle to gently smooth out some of the corners of the handle. Then I gave it two light coats of satin finish urathane for some wear and weather resistance. The pivot area has been greased with petroleum jelly for some extra protection for the wood from water. I just use a paper match or pipe cleaner to smear a good coating in, then fold up a paper towel or tissue and wipe out the excess. And I do believe that I have done a little file work on the locking ring so it twists a little farther around to the right for a better lockup.

I hope it serves you well in your time in Africa and long after. Opinels are great knives for a very little bit of money.

God speed.

Carl.

Oh ok, cool. I like the modded one a LOT better! The drop point is very nice and the handle looks very nice too. It goes to show how good he is if I couldnt tell and thought it was factory. IMHO this is better than factory.
