Today was a really good day! After patiently waiting for weeks and weeks (ok...so in reality it was only days and days but you all know how that feels) the package I have been waiting for finally arrived!
Some time back I started looking for someone to make a kydex sheath to make a drop sheath for my wife's Chris Reeve Aviator. By the time I had decided on who was going to make it, our own Marion David Poff, I had also gotten a couple of other knives I wanted sheaths for. I decided I wanted tan sheaths for one of my HESTs and my Izula because I carry them both primarily on my Green Khaki pack and the black just seemed so stark against such a light colored pack. The drop sheath for the Aviator is still a work in progress so more on it later, but I am really happy to have my tan sheaths for the knives I use with my pack. Thank you Marion, awesome job! Exactly what I wanted!
This is the Izula and HEST as they came...
and this is them in their new sheaths!
The Izula sheath was formed for one that has the new scales, and even though mine doesn't it solves a major problem I was having. Now I can keep the Izula further into the "sleeve" on the Janus pouch so it is a bit less conspicuous, but now I have no problems re-sheathing the knife without accidentally cutting part of the pouch. Plus I am thinking about getting the scales rather than a cord wrap because I like having the full diameter of the circle at the end to hook my finger in to draw the knife when needed.
The holes on the HEST sheath are perfect for securing it to the nylon webbing straps on the shoulder strap of my pack.
I told Marion in our conversations that I wanted them bi-symmetrical so they didn't immediately scream knife if the tip of the sheath was seen. He nailed the shape I wanted dead on. I also said that secure retention was a major concern for me because of a few things. Among other things I travel through some rough terrain at times, I may find myself needing to climb to get to where I want to go. I don't like climbing vertical surfaces with a pack on so sometimes I'll attach some braided line and throw my pack up or down first and then climb. He did an awesome job on the retention of all three sheaths! Very secure and no rattles what-so-ever! They'll be seen more over time, today I barely had enough light to do what I did when I got back from the post office.
Once again, awesome job Marion thank you very much!! I'll talk to you later about one for the RC-4 and the sheath design I want to do for the Black Star...it will be...a little interesting I think.
