I bought my first Spyderco in whatever year A.G. Russell offered the Jess Horn models. Since that time, I have amassed around two dozen different models and would have dozens more if I were financially able. In all the years I've carried knives I have always sharpened them free-hand on stones, both natural and diamond. I've never considered myself more than mediocre at sharpening but generally I could get a usable edge on most of my blades. The downside was that here were a few exceptions; knives that for whatever reason, I could never get satisfactorily sharp. Eventually I just accepted this fact and put the stubborn ones away. I only used the knives that I could sharpen well.
I've known about the Sharpmaker for years but for some reason I never considered trying it. Well, today I remedied that situation. My Sharpmaker arrived this afternoon. After watching the video I got to work. I now wish I bought one of these systems years ago. The time and frustration it would have saved me would have been significant. The first thing I did was get out those troublesome dull disappointments that I gave up on. In no time, I could feel an edge that I was satisfied with! Then I got out my steak knives and gave them a tune-up. Finally, I took out a few knives that I considered sharp and did a few passes on the white stones with them just to see what would happen...the improvement of even their sharpness was noticeable. What a great product! Thank you Mr. Glesser; not only for the excellent knives you make, but also for an easy way to keep them sharp.

Hi Stelth,

Thanx much for the kind words.

Every day I learn something new and wonder why I hadn't learned it sooner. I guess that's par for the course in "living a life". I'm sure your experience in hand sharpening was good for you as well. After using the Sharpmaker for a while, I believe your hand sharpening will also improve.

Great post, which serves as another recommendation for me. I really need to get a Sharpmaker.
Always great to hear from the man himself as well.

The Spyderco company as a whole is a great thing. One of the best. Where would the knife industry be without them?

My is Sharpmaker is going on 25yrs and still does the job
on 99% of the knives if have or had.

25+ years on my original Sharpmaker and it's still going strong! I've been thinking about adding the upgraded version but haven't pulled the trigger yet.

This is very true, I was always terrible at sharpening, and after a while using the sharpmaker I was able to hand sharpen significantly better.
