Let's hear a big round of applause :thumbdn::thumbup: for all those guys who; look for those torque shafts, R/R car springs, roller bearings or other steel goodies, pick them up, stowe them away in their vehicles and then drop them off at our forges. Many times I don't know who to thank. The booty is just, there, in front of my shop door when I arrive. What a wonderfull service they provide. Great quality
steel, that was headed for the scrap heap, is instead, turned into a usefull and beautifull knife. I figure, more than just a few of you guys who frequent this web site, are Scrap Dudes. So, I put my hands together and applaud your efforts. The forgers of this nation are in your debt. Fred

I should take some pic'c of the NECKA's warehouse that I have here. :D :D It's woods to a reel of cable and most things in between. :D
I stop by one of my Bro's Bike Shop this past week and he gave me 3 HD primary chains all with diamonds on them. These are like gold to me. :D :D

I'm a little envious about the chains. I might be tempted to swap you for some of my wrought iron jail bars. I feel like a kid at christmas time when someone
shows up with a load of junk in the back of their pickup. When I first started, they used to bring me everthing including beer cans, empties, I'm sad to say. They are a lot more discerning, 7 years down the road. Fred :D

Fred,
The modified "S" brackets that clamp to the rails to keep them from creeping along the ties, any idea what type of steel? I know they have a lot of carbon. The one I tried worked a lot like 1095. Can you verify or at least "best guess" it? I can pick up plenty of these along the local RxR tracks.
Been finding the smaller guage spikes. I have been told they are from the early 1920's. About 2/3 rds the size of the modern spikes. Work about the same and they're not WI.

Fred; If you want to swap???? I'll weight up one of the chains and you send me the same weight in WI. I got 4 HD's and one off my Indian hanging in the shop. The Indian one I am making 3 identical knives with one for me and one for each of my 2 sons. :D :D

Morning George,

Weigh one of those chains. I'll dig in my piles of goods and see if I have enough w.I. to swap.

I think 1095 is a good call on those rail brackets. My brother in law, who is a metallurgist, tells me the same. In my experience, cutting the sharp bend off of one end of the bracket, then welding a handle on at this point makes them very easy to straighten. One heat will have them flat. Grind the surface of rust. It will show up in the heat treat. I forged 6 of these into blades last night in 2 hours. [ air hammer ]
My neighbor, who works for the RxR bought me a hundred of these brackets.
I have forged 50 of them into blades. Keep your metal HOT!!!! Fred

Thanks Fred. It sure moved like 1095 under my "power" hammer. Tough to get moving but worked nicely once I got it's attitude changed. I just picked up 15 of them this morning cause they were looking at me funny. Think I'll teach them a lesson about staring at strangers carrying heavy canvas rucksacks (scavengers' dream).
I also thought I'd give some of those big lock washers go. They're about right for a decent bird/trout blade once I get their HT dialed in.
Your neighbor ever drop off one of those big 1 3/4" switching bars? They are about 5' long and quite heavy. Power hammer ought to reduce them pretty easily. I'm not going to try it by hand though.

Morning Carl, The neighbor hasn't brought me one of the switching bars yet. I'll have to put in my order. I don't turn anything down that comes from the RxR. I figure they get good quality steel. The big springs from the rxr cars are great too. [1095]
What type of power hammer are you using? Fred

COOOOOL!!! I'll send you a BM. :D

Not to interject into what might be a fair transaction, but I hope BM doesn't stand for what I have always heard it to be...If so, I would say the deal stinks to me!

:D:foot:;)

Hey!!!! I'll double wrap it so none of it will leak out. I'll make sure I have plenty of my HT'g relish a few days before I package it up. :barf: ;) HEHEHEHEHEHE!!!!

Fred,
Right now my PH is my good health and right arm. Therefore, I am a little more reserved about experimenting with the bigger dimension stock. I kind of like to know before I get to really wailing on something big.
We played around with some RxR steel this weekend at Trackrock. Some of the "S" brackets and several spikes of various grades including some early 1920's small guage. More carbon in them than you might think.

Sounds like you had fun at Trackrock. Nothing like getting together and pounding some metal with friends. Did you get a blade finished there? I ground the bevels on those 6 "S" bracket blades I forged last week. I'll be cutting the shoulders tomorrow. I am trying to get some pieces ready for a show in Cambridge, Ohio. It's coming the first of Nov. I forged using arm power only, for 2 years. Man, I had a grip that would crush walnuts. I finally scraped the money together for the power hammer in 2002. :o I get a little misty just thinking about it. Do you have planes to get a P.H.? I hope one is in your future. Fred
