Firstly an apology to you sir! This has been far too long in coming. There is simply no excuse for my tardiness on this :o

I wanted to express my gratitude for a very generous gift from scruffuk here. This came to me months ago and it is something I had desired to have for the longest time. It is not a complete specimen, but the good bits from one. scruffuk and I had chatted one time about these and many moons later he remembered this and sent this my way as a thank you of sorts.

That's right, an Eskilstuna barrel knife !

Quite frankly I was blown away by this gesture, and have admired the clever design of this knife over and over again.

My hope is that at some point I can fabricate a handle for this and put her back into some useable shape again, so far the inspiration has not struck me, or as Thom put it, "when the penny drops" ;) :)
Thank You so very much Thom! A very cool puzzle you have bestowed upon me :)
and again, please forgive my tardiness...

Duane, you are very welcome my friend. I'm sure you shall rise to the challenge.
(You should look at getting hold of some pre made puukko ferrules btw ;))

Jon - Is that from your own collection?

Here is some more inspiration...http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...e-A-complete-stroke-of-luck!?highlight=barrel

AND I realise I've not posted something else.....but I shall have to photograph and share later!

Are there any current manufacturer's that make this pattern?

There are a few contemporary makers of this traditional design, mainly in more modern blade steels and/or more ornate handle materials.
The French maker J.M. Remaud currently seems the most prolific.

Jon - Is that from your own collection?

Yes, it has been with me for 49 years, a gift from an old smuggler named One Eyed Mose when I was 12 living in Spain. He also gave me my first Puukko then, which was stolen about 10 years ago. I fell in love with one of his daughters when I was 20.

His daughter is no longer with me, but the barrel knife has survived all my moves, as well as my marriage, to a different beautiful woman that is also no longer with me.

I suppose you could infer that Ive been more loyal to my Barrel knife, than to the mothers of my children, but thats another story.

And thanks to Duane, I now have a Puukko again, that is very close to my heart. I have nothing but respect and admiration for Duane's handycraft.

Great suggestion on the Puukko Ferrules btw, I was wondering how he was going to fabricate the bolsters for the barrel knife. Note that the bolster at the notched end of the barrel knife is just an open tube. Its cap end is part of the blade assembly. This photo also reveals the bolster pin that serves to engage the notch on the latch.

Thom is a great guy - that´s a fact. :) I´m sure you really enjoy this nicely made and beautiful knife.

Those barell knives are just wonderful!!

I know you will love this, Duane :)

Jon - Great story! It's got some years on it ay.

As for the bolster...well this is what the puukko ferrules are for. It would only take a few minutes with a saw and file to remove the face to make one into a ring.

A needle rasp & file to make the spring recess too. This Holmberg differs from our knives as it uses a retaining pin which seats into a hole in the spring, rather than a step/notch. Setting the pin in the right spot is the tricky bit....but it's not beyond a man of Duane's talents I'm sure.

Thanks for all the kind words guys :)
Ferrules! I'm going to do some searching for them soon! Thanks for the sound of copper ringing as it hit's the floor, dancing and spinning a dervish dance! You da Man Scruff!
Jon, thanks a bunch for the great pics of your very special barrel knife, and the stories of your Puukko enriched past! One Eyed Mose sounds like quite a guy! :) I am also very touched by the way that the Dog Chew has filled a place of a special knife from your past...thanks for sharing :)
