I've been into knives for a long time and always bought them/collected them based on how cool I thought they looked, never thinking of them as a tool. Needless to say, my room was (and still is) filled with many Hibben and Kit Rae fantasy knives, never using them, just admiring them. In the past few years I started getting into carrying a knife (folder) and my father introduced me to Cold Steel, and I loved them. He taught me that a knife can be so much more than eye candy.
In the past year I've gone to a few shows, watched tons of youtube videos and really tried to educate myself as best as I can on everything knives. But the biggest factor in considering my self 'knowledgeable' in knives has been here at the BladeForums.
There is such a wealth of information in here on blade steels, craftsmanship, blade grinds, handle materials, etc. that now I know what to look for in a purchase with 100% confidence. No longer do terms like lockup, CPM-M4 and spanto sound like a foreign language. I enjoy reading the threads on everything from a new score in the Busse threads to the 25 different 'is a $400 knife worth it?' -- and let me say yes, yes it is. If you can appreciate higher quality in form and function and have the means to do so, then yes, it is worth it.
So thank you to everyone that takes the time to post here, discuss all things sharp and educate other people.
