I thought about doing this as I approached 500 posts, but the knife I picked up for the purpose has decided it likes life at my house. I finally decided on one to give away this afternoon. More on that in a moment.

I have received such a warm welcome since I arrived in January, and gained such valuable information from the members of this sub-forum, that I wanted to express my appreciation. So, here are the entry guidelines.

1) You must have the majority of your posts in the traditional sub-forum.

2) You must be a paying member (it does cost to keep this remarkable resource available to us).

3) You must tell us at least one story of how you have benefited from your interaction with the other members of the traditional sub-forum.

4) One entry per person, your post number will be your entry. Feel free to post more than once with good stories, but only your first post in the thread will be entered.

I will leave this open until June 30 (which is my Mom & Dad's wedding anniversary) or I reach 600 posts, whichever comes first.

In the past (with another hobby) I have encountered international shipping difficulties, but I'm willing to ship anywhere because so many of the folks who make this such a great place are outside the United States.

And now for the knife. It is a Remington UMC sleeveboard pen, most likely of German manufacture from the 1970s. The scales are tortoise acrylic (perhaps celluloid, but I don't think so). Here are the knife's dimensions.

3.3125" closed

5.25" w/spear blade open (the spear blade is 1.6875")

4.8125" w/pen blade open (the pen blade is 1.25")

0.375" wide

I'll have a go. Thanks for the opportunity for a nice knife . . . and to read some good stories!

The most significant interaction for me has been in going to the BLADE show two of the last three years. This would never have been as enjoyable without the welcome friendship of the two previous mods, Bastid and Blues. Gus and Elliott are two of the nicest and most knowledgeable knife guys around, and they gave me a lot of valuable info before the show, and included me in the traditional group activities once I got there. Greetings in the pit, and getting to schmooze up in Tony Bose's room the night before the show was very special. Tony, Reese and Kerry Hampton are very giving of their time and expertise about knives and knifemaking, and made a regular joe like me feel very welcome. The knives are great, but the people who make them are extra special!
 
Thanks for the chance Doug...I'm just glad to say that it was you who bought that Lloyd shadow off of me and that started the whole ball rolling with your membership here. I've benefited from the forum as a whole as a place to educate myself, meet members from other parts of the US and the world, and to pass the time reading up on this hobby we all share.
 
My most memorable interaction on traditionals was with you Doug. I was really surprised and your actions made my heart feel good. Your act if kindness behind the scenes is on my mind daily, and I hope to finish my end as soon as possible, however it will not be soon.....

Neat give-away...and just perfect for the Traditionals crowd.
I always long to met the great folk here in Traditionals, and I would love to start naming names, but to miss just one name out of a very long list would be extremely rude...but for a real greenhorn in the slipjoint world, conversations with Charlie slinged me over this way to Traditionals when I had put a post up in Bernards forum..and from there.....I have "met" so many other Tradional knife lovers, and become totally hooked on these knives.
Personal behind the scenes conversations, phone calls to the States, Canada, gifting to members, and also on the receiving end of gifts...its just a warm, heart-felt decent place to belong to, and I really do feel a belonging here ( even though I dont possess the knowledge most of our fantastic mates here have), and often in this world the people who hold knowledge are not keen to share, but here - the knowledge is freely shared.

I'd love to be counted in for this one, Doug.

And it's ironic that Jeff has already posted. I won a give-away from him with rams horn scales if I remember correctly. He through in a couple extra knives because he noticed that one of the knives wasn't up to his standards. Most people, me included, would have probably said "it is what it is" and have been done with it. He went the extra mile to make sure I'd be happy with what I received. There's a lot of foks here in the Traditionals that are like Jeff though. Maybe that's why I like hanging out here.
 
I'd love to get in on this one myself. I'm thinking hat I need a pen knife, especially a Remington.

I could tell several. One particular story will have to have names changed to protect the guilty. I was admiring a certain knife owned by member, let's call him Bill (not his real name). One day Bill lists a knife for sale that I remember a certain other forum member saying he wanted to find. I contacted both in hopes a deal might be stuck. As it turns out the other member didn't have the ability to buy at the time, so Bill sold the knife to someone else. A while later I get a PM from Bill thanking me and telling me he is sending the knife of his that I had been admiring several weeks earlier. I was stunned by his kindness. His only request to me? If you ever mention it on the forum say that the person who gave it to you wishes to remain anonymous.

Thanks for the GA, it's a nice one. I think my best experience here in the sub-forum is first, the understanding that I am not alone with the vintage traditionals folders bug, and second, the vast amount of knowledge and sharing of it amongst the members. So thank you all for that and for being who you are.

Great giveaway!

How have I benefitted by participating in this forum? Well, I collected knives for a number of years, and have always held on to them like they were the crown jewels or something. It's not that I was cheap or selfish, it's just that I was afraid to lose something that I might not be able to get back.

So, while participating in this forum through the years, I have learned more about giving to others, and the joy that it brings when you can brighten someones day. I did a giveaway here sometime back, and gave away several knives. Forumites also shared with me stories of people that had inspired them. So, I got the joy of giving, as well as learning something about others on this forum.

In the end, knives are just hunks of metal, bone, etc., but it's the friendships we make that are the true collectibles.

I don't have a story per se, but I have to say this is the one spot on the internet where I feel that I have true friends. Everywhere else I roam, there's people that are helpful for research or information purposes, even people that I share interests with and enjoy "conversing" with, but it's here where I actually care about these people that I have never met. This is the one place on the internet that would really affect my life in a negative way if it went away.

But if I had to give one "story", it would be when I was very green here and got a violation for inappropriate language. I PM'ed Bastid apologizing up and down. He pretty much told me not to worry, it was a rap on the knuckles, just don't do it again, then he welcomed me aboard. It made me realize that there are alot of pretty cool people on here. Boring story, but it was a lot cooler in my head.
