I just want to say thanks to the people here on Bladeforums for being here for me. Im not trying to be sentimental but i want to share to everyone my story. I live in the country and its a beutiful place. My family has been on the same land since the Civil War. My grandmothers house is well over a hundred years old now and I live right behind it. I have family all around me and i am a blessed man. About a year ago i got a kidneystone and went into the hospital. It turned out to be 9mm big and i had to have surgury to get it out. They went into my back and took it out. It was a 8hr surgery and during the surgery my heart stopped and i coded. It was only supposed to be an 1hr surgury but i started bleeding internally and that is why it got so bad. Any way i got staff infection from it and i have lost my kidney. Now im facing another surgery to have it taken out. I have no male freinds that care about knives or survival stuff and the only person that was into this stuff with me was my Uncle Fred. He lived beside me and we talked guns and knives all the time. We would stay in the woods hunting Civil war stuff and looking at Old Home places. We were big History nut buddies. I stayed at his house alot at night cause we watch gold fever on the t.v. We went to the Smokey Mtns alot and camped out. We cooked out over a fire and just had a great life together. I have a wife and 2 girls, they care nothing about knives or woods stuff. So my uncle was my buddy. Anyway he died about six months ago and now i walk out on my front porch every night and look at his house and just miss him so much. I had gotten really lonely and then I discoverd you guys. Bladeforums and the people on here has given me somthing to do again and people to talk too. You guys really have saved my life. Im not working anymore due to my health problems and i am hoping i can after this surgery. It gets so boring here at my house by myself. I dont have my job or my Uncle to spend my time with but i have you guys. Thanks for being out there in the world and thanks for sharing my interest. Im a veteran and i am 38yrs of age. My name is Wayne........I just wanted to tell the people of bladeforums that yall have become and extentsion of my family......Thanks for being there.

Thanks for sharing, I consider my BF buddies as true friends, especially the ones on my good guy list. They write me often and often alert me to items of my collection taste. BF buddies are some of the best.

Yes some of the BF folks do become like an extended family as time goes on. Take care, rest up and heal, and what better way than to have a chat with the bunch here.

I sometimes feel the same way, my father was my hunting buddy and has Emphysema, so is hunting days ended about 5 years ago.

After my mother passed away he sold his house ( where we hunted) and moved into town. I belong to a rod and gun club , but it's not the same.

My wife and two daughters have no interest in hunting, shooting or knives. So yes this is a great place to meet people with similar interests.

The most important thing is your health so I hope you get well

I want to retire to the smoky mtn region, so maybe someday we'll meet up....

You have family all around, hmmm. Your girls might not be interested in such things, but might there be a nephew (or niece) or two out there that would like to have an uncle like you had? Once you get your medical situation squared away, what better way to honor his memory than to pass it on. It would be good for your state of mind too I think.

I can really relate. I had my pacemaker replaced about 1 1/2 years ago and it became infected with staph and I had to have chest surgery to have it removed. I was off work 3 months and being here really helped the time go by. This place is my lifeline because nowhere else do people understand what it's like to be a knife nut. My wife and co-workers think I'm crazy for being so much into knives but here I feel at home.

Keep your head up, you'll get better. There were times that I thought I would never get better but I did and now I feel like a million bucks. Sometimes recovery can be painfully slow. Sorry about the loss of your kidney, that really sucks. In a couple months God willing you will be much better. It's the not knowing what's going to happen that is torture. I think we're real lucky to have this support system. I really freak out when bladeforums goes down for some reason or other. Try to keep a positive outlook, I got better and so will you.

Blue sky got a good point. Find someone to pass the knowledge to. My uncle and grandfather did the same for me. Now I'm working on getting my wife and son (2yrs) into it. It seems to stick with them. If I had nieces or nephews older than 1 yrs old then I would start them too. Keep the tradition alive and get well.

Segaman22: I hope your health improves and do look for someone to mentor. There is just not experienced teachers will to take the time.

It always comes down to friends and family. I came from a very tight knit family where every Aunt and Uncle and cousin was like a mother , father or sibling. We all got together at least twice a month and all the guys fished and hunted as did a lot of the girls. As the older folks started passing on life sure got harder but as mentioned I started taking the younger kids out fishing and hunting and on camping trips. The loved it and thought I was the best guy in the world. Little did they know that it was me who benefited the most. I hope the guys who passed this on to me can see the results and even more, I hope the kids that I shared with do the same when they are the old folks. The cost or privilege of close friends is to pass it on. The very best to you in your recovery. You sound like the kind of person I would like to share a campfire with.

bladeforums is many things to many people ,,one thing it is is a community

I'm glad to be a part of this community as well.

Segaman22, I'm not trying to take away from BF at all, this place is great. But at times when BF might be temporarily down, consider coming to some of the other forums as well:

Spyderco
Candle Power Forums
EDC Forums
Knife Forums
Benchmade Forums

A lot of us are on these forums pretty regularly as well.

Hi, Wayne. There's a brotherhood and comradery among guys like us who enjoy the outdoors, knives, firearms, and all the tools and skills used in the wilderness by generations of men. I find it every time I go to a public shooting range, regardless of where I am, a gun or knife show, even when browsing in a sporting goods store. And you definitely find it here.

I, too, miss the older guys in my family who are now gone as well as a couple older friends who were as close as family to me. I had one special friend who was like my second father, as well as business partner, mentor and closest buddy, who I miss a lot because he was the guy who made everything fun, and truly understood me; a lot like you and your uncle, I'm guessing. Over time I've come to know that they all live on in me, and so I try to live for them -- enjoy the things they enjoyed, do the things they loved to do.

There are a lot of great folks here, guys I'm sure your uncle would have liked. Hope to see you around a lot!

I can truly say without hesitation that some of the most honorable people you will ever meet are on here. I may never meet them face to face, but they are friends and I thank them all for their help. I do have to agree that this site has become a lot like a brotherhood where members watch out for each others best interests at heart.

take care and get better and don't leave BF for another forum :D

Thanks guys for your support. I do have 3 nephews that live beside me but there more into gameboy, football and stuff. I bought the 2 oldest boys knives and i am hoping they want to camp some. I was in the Infantry in the Army and i have alot of knowledge of the outdoors. I think i am going to be a Scout leader when i get better. That sounds like my sort of thing. We dont have a troop in my area and i think ill just start one. Its funny now that i think about it. My Uncle was a scout leader at one time when he was younger. He went to work for UPS driving a truck and had to stop doing it. Hey you guys are my true freinds and brothers. Im glad i found yall. Thanks again for your kind words. Oh and for the record. I am a Certified Knife nut. I still have the very first knife i ever owned, now im up to about 75 knives or so and i am not stopping, unless my wife is shopping with me. She has a way of putting a kink in my knife buying somtimes, but over all she lets me.

Oh and JPD1998, my dream is to live in those Smokey Mtns also. I love it there. I just got back from there about a month ago. They were so Beautiful......I love that ride from Gatlinburg over to Cherokee. That 30 mile ride is worth the whole vacation to me.
