I just wanted to let you guys know that I appreciated all your advice in regards to the purchase of my new 1911.

I was going to buy a Wilson Combat, but my buddy decided to sell me his Colt Combat Commander (In mint condition) for $300.00.

With the dough I saved on the purchase price, I will send it to Wilson Combat for some custom upgrades and have it dehorned and re-finished. Before anyone says anything, I will post before and after pics when the pistol is finished. Thanks again Hogs!!!!

CT Brian would be one to look at as well for custom work. Some have compared him to a young Heinie. (Looks like he isn't taking on any work except for full house customs and his "production" pieces.)

I've spoken to 2-3 former gunsmiths for Wilson's..........

Long story short, I'm sending mine elsewhere.....

A great buy. A small gun that isn't too small. You'll save a ton of cash, evenn after a little smithing.

The Wilson I had was a compact CQB and the FFL I had it delivered to was a smith as well. He looked it over and told me he could have made one for me for about the same price and it would have as good or better. He pointed out a barrel that when in full battery you could push down on the hood and get it to move down a fraction of a millimeter. Probably not the best work. I traded it for a Baer and don't miss it one bit. The Baer shoots better anyway. I would definitely shop around for a smith you can trust and that comes highly recommended. Big name doesn't always equal quality.

I can't hit $hit at 50 yds. with my stock Colt Commander but a friend of mine who is more proficient was popping beer cans with great regularity at 50 yds. with Federal ball ammo. I dare say that if you were inside my house I could hit close to center mass off hand.

I think it's funny that a lot of the Wilson critics were trained by him, but now think they can do it better.

If he is such a mediocre smith, why is everyone that comes out of his shop such an expert?

It looks to me like he knows what he is doing, but may be difficult to work for.

WoW, nice score! You must have a great friend! Here is my Commander with the Busse grips.

You guys got my wheels turning, my wife's uncle has a Commander NIB. He paid $575 in 97 or 98 and said he'd let me have it for that. I think I'm gonna grab it.

Some people are better teachers than employers as well. Custom is a term that has been redefined in recent years. Quality seems to suffer for many "custom" shops become popular and try to keep up with demand. WC is one shop that seems to have had higher end pieces come out in the past in comparison to recent work I've seen.

RJD, nice score. I use to love shooting a Commander with match sights and barrel. It's been awhile. Get some pics Bro!;)

Very nice. For concealed carry, I find I like the Commander the best of the 1911 pattern. The Officer's ACP has too many functional issues and the Government Model is just enough larger to fall from favor. I have three: A pre-Series Commander in the original 9mm, pre-Series Combat Commander like yours (albeit unmodified and showing its age), and a limited run Stainless Lightweight. One day it will get a spa treatment. I just have to decide what I want done and choose a shop to do it.

Tim,

What is the story behind the pommel shape on that Mean Street? It looks like someone had a wild hair and just ground it off flat?

Rick - really a revolver guy, but open to other ideas

I got the Custom Shop MS at Blade last year, you'll have to ask Jerry for the pommel story, probably has to due with some Blue Label!
