After doing some research - and seeing a sale at REI.com I decided to go against a lot of the advice on BF (it was really great - and got me a great understanding of what to look for). I decided to buy a DeLorme PN-30.

Here is a review of the PN-40 which is a 'best buy' as rated on a lot of sites:

The PN-30 only lacks the Digital Compass (which I don't need) and the Barometiric Altimiter (I am in Houston okay?).

I paid under 200 dollars and got a 1 GB card, a great set of maps, and all the trimmings.

I hooked it up today - figured out how to use it (basically) and have set it up to Geocache (I can download Geocaches directly to the handhelp through my lap top and route on the fly.

Seems really nice.

Thanks WSS.

Good Deal!

If you decide using Topo 8.0 and need some help, let know. That is when the DeLorme units really shine.

I had the PN-20 and loved it so much I bought the PN-40. My fire department asked me what GPS to buy and I suggested a PN-20. When I bought my PN-40 I donated my old PN-20 to them so they now have two. These are great devices, and that is from a Garmin man since the GPS 45 in 1994. Every GPS I have owned is a Garmin, I still have 3 pretty current Garmins but I almost exclusively use the Delorme now for everything.

Brian,

I may need to call you. I have been using it - but the damned thing needs a manual man!

I LOVE it that you can use the laptop and the GPS and an in car GPS device. It speaks to you! THis was an unexpted suprise - and one that REALLY made the 30 a great buy for my uses.

I am off to Geo Cache tommorow! I know right where two are!

T - are you sure that is your GPS talking to you? It could be your conscience simply screaming something like "YIELD" :D

Hmm, I might have to check these DeLormes out. I've been looking for a decent but not to expensive GPS. Thanks for posting this.
