Heat was the problem. That, hitting to hard and rushing things in general. Built a new gas forge out of 9 in. schedule 40, inswool, firebrick and ...wa-la enough heat. Still much to learn but at least it formed into a nice billet. Some low spots and some problem areas when folding but it's all about practice now. Thanks longrifle for the hour and a half phone call too.
