I was just made aware of this post by Rob Simonich under the "Triple Ground Natural Outlaw" thread. Geez, Rob hasn't posted anything over here since he said "Hi" to Papathud in April of 2001. I could almost get the impression that he thought I "got the idea" from him for this spinal chisel grind.

"Looks like the ol Puma White Hunter's top edge. That is where I got my idea, and Carson's U-2 was inspirationas well." --- Rob Simonich

I looked through the shop and found an older blade Circa 1984 that had this same feature. I never sold it because I screwed up the etch on the front of the blade. 3/16th thick D-2 tool steel with a black and red pakkawood handle. Two brass screws and the stamped "B" in the ricasso as well as the "Busse logo in scroll" near the tip of the blade. I was probably inspired by something at the time, but I just remember doing it because it looked pretty cool. I made a ton of Desert Storm fighters with this same feature. On some of them, I serrated the top edge.

I also found this picture of a knife I made in 1986. It was the precursor to the Steel Heart design. A while back "Doctor" Ron Hood argued that I had gotten the idea for putting a drop in the Ergo Handles from him and TOPS. . . . I made this knife more than 10 years before before I became acquainted with Hood and more than 12 years before TOPS came into existence. Wish I could've found this picture then. . . It kinda shoots holes in that theory too!

Jerry,
That is a great looking knife. It's the first I've seen with that grind that actually appealed to me. What would you take for it :)
It took a few emails from Marc for me to realize what the purpose of it was.

Keep up the good work.
I'd bet alot of us would like a INFI version of the first knife. I know I would.

Jerry, got anymore of those inspirational pieces laying around,
I'd like to see more of them, they're cool!

Thanks for sharing the pixs with us Jerry. Nice to see some of your earlier knives & their history. You were just ahead of your time. So when are you going to bring out the fillet knife on steriod again? :D

I really screwed up the logo on this one and of course I did it in a location where I couldn't possibly remove it!!!  That's why it was never sold. . . .I'm thinking about using it as a door stop ;)

Hey, Jerry: What other old, rare knives do you have laying around, unsold because of minor cosmetic blemishes? I'll tell ya what--I'll take 'em off your hands. Heck, you don't even have to pay me a storage fee. No, really, anything for a friend....

What's that? O-kayy, I'LL pay for them. You're selling them at a steep discount, because they're defective, right?:D

I was rifling through old boxes of knives last night and you can't believe some of the stuff I found.

Any Harley Davidson knife collectors out there??? Anybody remember the 1988 HOG 5 ? It was the 5th anniversary knife of the Harley Owners Group. Gil Hibben designed it and it was made in 1987. Saw a sample blade I had ground for the project. . . . hmmmmmmm. . . . . Saw a prototype that was sent to Ruger back in 1985 for a Big Bowie. . . . Saw a Vasco-Wear blade from 1985. . . .Quite a few pieces from '82 - '84 . .. . . . Found a "Mountain Man" style thrower. . . circa 1980. . . . very ugly. . . . Found lots of early D-2 blades. . .some with handles. . . some without. . . . It's a big warehouse for knives. . . .

Jerry

That ancestor of the Steel Heart is great!

I would love to be let loose in your warehouse....like an INFI rat ;)

Given the age and history of the knives pictured, I don't know what the heck Rob S. was talking about???!

As for Ron Hood's "claims", that "Fat Shark" (as Idaho calls it) proves the ergo handle was around a very long time!

Thanks Jerry for clearing all that up.

Andrew,

Why don't you post the pics of the one I showed you guys on Sunday of the show.

Larry:D

*sigh* Jerry, my post in the other thread was meant to head off this sort of discussion to begin with. I didnt "invent" the bandbreaker, I didnt even start making that grind till a year and a half ago. Its a good feature on a combat knife for all the reasons listed.

A bandbreaker? I just assumed that it was a Navy Seal barnacle remover. ;)
