It was nice to read the inviting comments toward the newcomers! :)

I normaly carry a Leatherman, or a Spyderco if I just want a knife, but both of those are full of comprimises. They are both designed for modern functionality and I like that, but sometimes I get a hankerin' for something more simple and "perfect", if you know what I mean. So I always find myself checking out quality slipjoints, but haven't quite found what I'm looking for.

I'd love a single or double bladed slipjoint, which must include a warncliffe style blade. I'd also like the folded lengnth to be under 3.5", with wood, bone, or stag scales. My ideal would be a single wharncliffe, 2.5"-3" folded, with long-lasting stablized wood scales.

So, any sugestions from the experts? Will my best bet be to get a custom? If you feel like it, let me know what your ideal knife is/would be as well, I'd enjoy hearing about your ideas.

Thanks, Luke

Luke,

Welcome to the forum.

Better sit down, get a drink, hide the wallet and be prepared for the onslaught!

I like your choices in blades and a wharncliffe trapper would fit the bill nicely.

I've seen some smaller beauties in the custom arena but we'll have to see what comes up from the factory side of the ledger that fits your size requirements.

How about this?

It came from here and is a Mini Copperhead with Wharncliff. It's 3-1/8" closed. Stainless blades. About $40. I have no connection with this vendor.

LukeC,
It is hard to choose indeed. I believe I may have the perfect pocketknife somewhere in my pile of accumulated slippy's but its 3:30 something in the morning here and I am just too tired to go look right now. But I promise I will go through them later on today and snap a picture if I find the one I am thinking about..

In the mean time perhaps you would consider a nice Whittler pattern. Here is one of my mine..

Got this one from one of the fine members here in a trade sometime back a piece. When I see it it always reminds me of Halloween. :D

OK, I found it.. So it doesn't have wood scales and it has two blades instead only one, but it is only 3 1/16 inches closed and its got a wicked sharp wharny for the main blade. I had forgotten I had this cool little Whittler. Thanks for making me remember this one, cause its already found its way into my pocket this morning..;) :D

Hey, thanks for the replies! I've really liked all the suggestions so far. That last one from sunnyd really looks sweet. All the sugestions so far have been cases, what do you think about the steel they use? I do like the fact that they make some smaller knives to choose from. I've heard great things about queen's d2, and S&M's ats34, but neither of them seem to make quite what I'm looking for...
Thanks again for the pics and links.
Also, what kind of price range would I be looking at if I were to get a custom? I have no idea at all, although I'm sure a Case would get along better with my wallet!

Case will usually be sub $50 unless you get something old or exotic.
Queen will be right around $50.
S&M will be $50-$75, unless it's something special.

Queen and S&M (esp. the latter) have a lot of low production number knives out there in patterns and materials that don't show up on current vendor sites. There are some sites that have historical patterns that may be worth looking at. (Eg, S&M may have made exactly what you're looking for, but it was a run of 250 pieces they did in 2003 as a "Premier #x" series and no vendor has those in stock any longer. You might see one fly by on eBay one day, and never see another one.)

Customs are all over the place, anywhere from $350 to $3500 and I'm sure more. Don't remember ever seeing one for less than that, though.

Sunnyd, do you have the pattern number on that half whittler? Looks an awful lot like the mini copperhead. Just wondering, since I'm a Wharncliff junkie, too.

Luke,
I just posted these pics in another thread(Barlow's) here in traditional. But after reading your last post here, I just realized this might be of interest to you. Check it out..

Its a custom by a knifemaker who is a member here and does a great business over here at bf.com's "knifemakes for sale forum".. Todd Davison
This one is a single blade Barlow pattern with a Wharny and has Snakewood scales and ATS-34, 3 1/8 inches closed.. I got this knife for a very reasonable price back about a year or so ago, however, his prices has gone up along with his popularity.

Sure Sambo,

It is 62109W in stainless.. Another one I nearly stole from Lowes when they were doing the final closeouts on all their knives.. ;)

I'll tell you what, I almost cried when that source finally dried up. :(
