Thanks to all that responded about my question regarding flat grinding and the tip of the blade. I pulled out my grinder and tried the thing about raising the handle a bit.. and it worked!!!!!

I thought I 'd share a tip too then! For a push stick I've been using an eraser! It grips the steel well and lets me know when I haven't dipped my blade in time (a bit of the eraser melts to the blade.) How's that for a tip!
