Oregon Fal'er wrote me awhile back asking if I wanted to try some fatwood from the north west. Of course I said I'd love to, and thanks.

When I opened the box I found much more than resin rich conifer wood inside. There were also some cool patches, and a set of new walnut handle scales for my BK-17. They are a little fuller than the stock scales, but will still just snap into the retention straps of the sheath. The knife handles even better than it did. These scales are reeeeally nice! Now I am getting the urge to get one of the newer ones to etch and strip to put these scales on since I plan to use this knife in classes, but I'll leave them on this one for now.

Oh, and the fatwood ignites really easily and burns great too. Very rich, bu with a completely different smell than what we have here.

OF's a pretty generous guy. Good looking handles there too Mist. I used to think fatwood was just hype, stuff's awesome!

Nice scales!
That 'FALER is one classy dude.
Those are some great pics Mistwalker!

Someone should make some fatwood handle scales. The resin would make them tacky and you would always have tinder on ya. just shave off a small amount:D

Yeah man, your welcome. Your a heavy contributor on these forums and I get value out of your posts. Those are English walnut from an actual gun stock (swiss K31) Dated 1943. And in regards to the fatwood, it wasn't the best I've had in the past, it was the best I had at the time.

They look REALLY very nice....and being Walnut, are the perfect choice for a nut-nut like you.

Obviously I doubly approve what with them being from Blighty ;)

I am a fatwood convert, too. I use it regularly. I had never tried it until I saw it on the shelf at MalWart. Cant wait to get out and harvest my own.

O. F. is definitely on Santa's nice list! Really nice looking set of scales there. Maybe one day I'll win the O.F. lottery & get a set of sweet scales. :D

The scales are excellent (as always) and the fatwood looks like it's packed full of resin.

<camera geek mode> Did you use a macro lens for those shots? The fire images have great clarity and exposure.

Those are beautiful pictures!

Thank you!

Sounds like something he'd do.

So I am hearing

I can see that. The handle scales are really nice! It's some pretty awesome stuff, I had been using it for years before I ever heard it called fatwood. I was introduced to it as "lighter pine", and then heard it called pitchwood. It's all over the south east, but likely rare in your neck of the woods.

Those scales are sweet. Looks sick on the 17.

Yes they are, lol, they just seem to clash with the black coating.

Yes they are, yes he is, and thank you very much!

Oh...I doubt you'd like them for long due to the stickiness...and not being as durable as a harder wood.

Thanks man, glad you enjoy the posts. I always enjoy the pics from your part of the country and seeing what it is like up there. I need to hit that area at least once before I go. Yeah, I've seen some of your other stuff, but this isn't exactly shabby. Just brought home a stump of some really rich stuff. I'm going to send you a little and see if you notice the difference in smell too. It's always cool to check out things from other areas.

Yeah, I have been using this knife for eating a lot of walnuts lately. I wish ours were as easy to crack as the ones you guys have. Our black walnuts are harder to get into than English walnuts.

Those look great! OF is a good dude!

Yep, on both counts! :)

Pretty awesome stuff. I've been using it to start fires in wet weather and rain for over thirty years :)

Those scales look cool. Thanks for posting.

They sure do, classed this Becker right up :)

I should certainly think so! Maybe you will, sure caught me by surprise!

The sure feel good and fit the knife handle extremely well.

Nope, just a standard 18-55mm lens right at sunset, thanks I thought they turned out pretty good too.

Those are really nice.

Indeed they are!
