I had to miss the MWKK, but I did get a chance to meet Dan this weekend at the NECKA Hammerin. It was really great finally meeting someone from here. I haven't had time to pile up a large supply of khuks yet to show off with. Dan has, and did. Most of the people there showed a great interest in them. I had to leave very early in the day, hopefully, the khuks got a chance to strut their stuff a bit at the cutting contest. If so, we may start seeing some new faces in here. Thanks again for the sharpening info, and the chance to handle some nice khuks. Dan was also working on some wire damascus this weekend. There should be some good pics coming from him in the future.

Good to see you there, Tom. You missed all the fun....:D

After the cutting contest, and for the heck of it, I hung a piece of heavy duty oily 1" sisal rope and was able to cut it freehanging with both a 15" AK and my YCS - neither had been convexed, and the YCS was straight from the kamis' hands. (the 15" AK had been touched up a little bit)

They sailed right through it. The guys there knew it the khukuris were tough (duh....) but had no idea it could cut rope so well.

As you said....a few came away with a new appreciation for the bent blade.

Yeah, yeah,yeah- we know all that. Tell us how your damascus turned out! :D

fueled by Roadrunner's acquisition at the MWKK, I set out to forge some cable damascus at the hammer-in.

I forged 2 billets. One was too small. I put that one in my pocket. I forged another one, same size as the first one. One of the guys got this bright idea about making a sandwich of cable, O-1, and cable. (with my billets, of course) So I let' em go. It's still sitting there waiting to be welded up.

In the meantime, forged 2 other large billets. Both failed because the cable was not good. Delaminated no matter how hard we tried to keep it together.

Perhaps cable damascus is too elusive for me? That's certainly how I felt that night. But I'm ready to have another go at it as soon as I get my forge.

Even tho it delaminated a bit, it may be useful for you to retain them for bolsters or other fittings for future knife fittings.

I do love that cable forged stuff, and I am quite happy with the trade worked out by me and RR (I coulda never justified the $$$ for a SERE 2000, but a trade was the right way to go!)

I had already forged it to shape with bevels, etc.

I think the quality of the cable is a big factor. Some is great, some is crap. No way to know until you try it. Deepened the appreciation I have for that piece.

And yes, there'll be a dama-khuk in the near future....:D

Pen,
I don't know what your problem was with the cable Damascus, ( Not that I haven't had some problems my self) At this point I have seen rusted and galvanized used with fine results. By people with skills. One thing my Teacher will not attempt is "non twist cable" a type used in cranes. The core twists one way and the jacket goes the other.
Some of the coolest I have seen of late are some of the Teacher projects in this knife smiting class. One a bit "sewer snake" that was wrapped with bailing wire , had a snake skin look. That just holds the eye.
The other was two slabs of cable with a slab of spring and strapping for the core. When this was etched the center layers are darker and the cable did not look so cable like as it has drawn out. Net effect was a tanto that could be mistaken for a old Japanese build.

Ferrous,
how's the bike chain cutting? photos?

My cable, bearing, spring KLO is waiting on me making some mosaic pins and a bolster.
During this time "off" I tried a cable handle Damascus, all one bit of cable.
I got the first bit of cable to drawn out, and so tried to fold it over to give the blade some more mass. The end result is a handle that got a little hot and burned some of the strands with a blade that looks great on ONE side the other side has the folded thin end of the cable that did not weld well.
I think it will be a good user if the bad side comes off there should be enough blade. By using it I think I will learn more then if I chucked it.

One question I had was that every tutorial I've ever seen on the stuff had you dunk it in water mixed with TSP/Borax? from a black, or dull red, heat to clean out the insides of the piece. I don't know if that would have helped. Hopefully I soon will.
