I recieved these two excellent fire steels in the mail the other day. Thanks Rick these are good spark throwing tools. I got a chance to play around with them today.

Great tools. Thanks again.

Rick's work is awesome, I'm still wanting one of his Strifes to use with some of the flint I harvested....need to try real flint and steel now.

Rick is an awesome fellow, and makes some really nice stuff.

Cool score.

Thanks, Hushnel...

From a users perspective, I have always been more comfortable with a pinch grip steel, as opposed to the knuckle wrap type. Some of my favorite steels were 2-3 inch sections of mill files. The period correct pieces were alot thinner, too. I think this may have been for 2 possible reasons... Either they were trying to cut down on weight or save money on materials... I tend to think the later because many of the "home made" artifacts were beefier, while the trade company models were on the thin side. To me, the heavier ones are easier to use.

The weight and length of the wrapped one really helps it throw those sizzlers... they were reaching the ground when I was testing it. The small one produces decent sparks for such a compact steel. I figured you'd put them to good use. These ones are going up on the site.

There is a bit of a learning curve on the small one, in the close proximity of flint I got a nice little nick on my knuckle :)

The large one is the easiest I've ever used and I've got 5 or 6 of them, probably more, seems like every rendezvous I pick up one or two more.
