When I learned to sharpen it struck me how many handmade and production run blades need work even when they are new.

I would like to congratulate Busse crew, especially Beef and Alex, for working out this widespread industry challenge. With the grab bags, it was surprising in a very positive way for me how sharp they were. Especially given the deals we were able to get on the blades.

Although with time and use I am bound to refine and customize the edges, I appreciate that these are 100% ready to go. The fit and finish on these knives were also perfect.

For any newer users here who have been concerned about this, as I was, I am happy to report that the out of box sharpness of Busse Combat blades = excellent.

I love how sharp these are out of the box. Does anybody know the approximate angle of the edge they put on? Does it vary from large to small blades?

Battlegrade SR101 flat ground AMS was around 23 degrees each side, but quite good. I thinned it out to 21 for good measure but the takeaway point is that the knife was usable and sharp. I could go lower at the expense of greater edge width, but I want to try it out at this level.

I expect the bigger knives will be slightly more obtuse from the shop based on the philosophy of design for that particular blade. Additionally, since they are hand sharpened the final edge angle will vary.

I wish they would send out all of their knives with 20 dps right out of the box. But yes, they have all been coming sharp lately and it is greatly appreciated! As all knives out of the box should be!!!

To me there is no one angle that is perfect for every knife. Given the Busse reputation for hard use, a slightly thicker edge bevel does make alot of sense.

Here is the AMS at just over 20 per side, which did not change the aesthetic of the blade or increase the edge width by more than a few micrometers, if any. You can go thinner at the expense of steel. I want to explore it here close to its original design parameters and see how it fairs.
