Right, details. Well my first thought was to use my CABSLE to do the heavier work and save the Max for the finer stuff inside. You know that thin Elmax looks so,..
thin. But, I was lazy and didn't want to clean two knives before I dragged her out. The Max worked great, start to finish. Sliced through the hide so easy I found I could control the depth of the cut, (no sign of dulling from the hair). I mean when I wanted to cut clean to bone, at the sternum or pelvis, just a little more pressure. When I worried about making a mess in the abdominal cavity, just a little less pressure. Slices perfect, I was very impressed with the level of control it provided.
Messer, I didn't cut the rib cage, glad I didn't, I think the drag out would have been tougher and she might have filled with debris. It was too warm to drag her out intact, I wanted to get the meat cool. Since I left the chest intact I had to get both hands deep into the ribcage to cut away the heart, lungs, trachea and any other connective tissue. Kind of the same thing at the southern end. With most of the gut pile out and down hill from the body, I cut the away the entrails from the lower intestine close to the exit. Reaching in with the blade, I used a kind of 'core-the-apple' circular move inside the pelvic girdle. Two rotations around, one clockwise, then one counterclockwise and the last bits came right out by the tail.
The Res-C handle is perfect, fills my hand but small enough to maneuver inside, easy to index the edge, not slippery despite the bloody mess and latex gloves. Cleaned up pretty easy in the field, I used a couple of wipes to remove the blood and fat that stuck on the blade, and put it back in the great crossdraw sheath Azwelke made for me.
After I got home and cleaned it thoroughly I was still very impressed at how sharp it was. I didn't try to slice paper, just tested it by shaving along my thumbnail. It seemed sharp enough, even with all that scraping against bone. I spent some time working on it at my Wicked Edge sharpener, just because I like to. Probably the same reason I wash my Harley after a good ride.
I'm sure you guys understand.
Season's not over until late February. If I score again I promise more pics.
