I have received an unusual amount of email from lurkers who never post but visit often, thanking me for posting the pix I took while I was in Nepal.

Your thanks is most appreciated and if you have the time and inclination make a post.

I know that this is not true of all "lurkers," but I imagine that some of them don't post simply because they're uncomfortable with expressing themselves in public -- a very common phenomenon.

Being an older cop and squad leader, I often have to give rookies orientation rides to acquaint them with the equipment and procedures used in the department's patrol cars (which we call "units"). Without question, the most difficult thing for these new deputies to do is talk on the radio. I actually had to get rid of one guy because he was so terrified of the radio that he refused to even pick it up -- and this was after he'd spent six months in basic training. Apparently, classroom simulation didn't prepare him for the reality of the job. Of course that happens a lot with many jobs: the training and the reality are worlds apart.

Steven, you are dead right. I get email everyday from lurkers who won't post because they fear for their grammar or of making some boo boo. Others just don't want to get public. I've had a few who had been burned by internet theft and won't post.

But they are certainly there and in greater numbers than any of us suspect.

Khukuri FAQ

Once in a while an ISP does a traffic study and then we get a hint how many lurkers there are on usenet. It varies a lot with different newsgroups but the average is about 10-20 lurkers for every member who ever posts. I suspect there are even more lurkers on web-based forums like this one than on usenet newsgroups.

Besides shyness, I think a lot of them don't post because they basically have nothing to say -- don't know the answers to questions posted or if they do they know somebody else is better qualified to answer, and they might not post questions themselves because they know how to find the answers faster with a search. I've done very little posting on some of the forums I read myself -- comp.sys.laptops, for instance; I've spent a lot of time there but very seldom posted.

Although "lurking" might sound like an antisocial activity (maybe we could have chosen a different word for it) lurkers are always welcome -- if you have something to say sometime you'll be welcome to post it, and in the meantime you're very welcome to keep lurking. I'm always afraid newbies will see talk about "lurkers" and think, oh, I'd better stop reading this forum, I don't want to be doing anything socially disapproved of -- don't worry about it! Lurking is not disapproved of; it's perfectly okay.

My sentiments, exactly, Cougar and thanks for posting this valuable info for lurkers. Personally, I'd rather call these folks interested visitors rather than lurkers. I don't like this nomenclature.

Interesting comments on lurkers. I think I fall into that catagory. For me, it is mostly because I like to "listen" before I speak...so until I know more or until I get my first Khuk, I will probably keep my "mouth" shut. I also don't really have much to say. I really enjoy reading all the posts and especially love the pix. I am also several days behind reading posts because I travel alot for work. But I learn more and more about khuks every day. If only money grew on trees I would probably get one of each...

hahaha...no two...yeah, yeah. Soon the stars and moon and earth etc... will line up and that wonderfull time known as "payday" will arrive and I can get my first khuk.
By the way, Uncle Bill, if I order a WWII 18" can I get that with a wood handle and how long for delivery time? Can you send me e-mail when the village khuks come in...it may be days after you post on the forum before I catch on...well I guess thats enough for now. Thanks everybody...cya later

Namaste,

I have done a litte posting, but I guess I am pretty much true to my UserName, Quiet.
I usually check out the HI forum daily, even on very busy days. Yes, I'm a happy HI owner as well.

Now, I do have something to say though- I believe we should all keep Bill in our prayers!

I check in every couple of days, I really find the pix of Nepal interesting. However, I don't see a Khurki in my future as I just don't need one. Nothing to add, so I just lurk.
