I think I might turn in early tonight, as I have some exciting reading to get stuck into!

Lemmy Caution recommended a book to me a few weeks ago – W.G.Sebald’s ‘The Rings of Saturn’. He kindly sent me a copy, and it turned up here at Grumble Towers this morning. I’ve already read a couple of chapters and am finding it an enthralling read

As is so typical of the great folks that hang out here, Lemmy slipped a couple of things into the parcel along with the book: An interesting coin/token, and this very special customised Opinel. Lemmy, I really like what you’ve done to this knife  I should say that Lemmy removed the ring to avoid any undue Customs attention, enclosing it in the envelope separately. I think I’m going to give this a go as a friction folder for now though, see how I get on.

A big thank you sir

Well if that wasn’t enough excitement for one day, in the afternoon a large box appeared, which had been sent by Dan (Parke 1). Inside the box, I first came across a handwritten letter, with instructions to unwrap the parcel before reading it.

Very thoroughly wrapped up, so as to protect it from the Atlantic, and from UK Customs officials, was a fine copy of the GEC book: Great Eastern Cutlery: An American Tradition by David Anthony. The book has a beautiful eye-catching cover, and the contents look absolutely fascinating. Since I carry more GEC-made knives than any other knife brand these days, I can’t wait to start learning more about the company's history. Thank you so much Dan

Along with the book was a small package, which I unwrapped to find a lovely old Imperial Boy’s Knife, similar to one Dan’s dad bought in 1951.

Dan has also graciously made me an honorary attendee at the 2014 GEC Rendezvous by sending me one of the buttons minted for the event. A bit of Photoshop-fu, and I could even be in the pics! ;) :D

Thank you for your kindness Dan, and thanks again Lemmy, two great guys :)

WOW Jack!!! Very very neat gifts. For some reason I tend to read ALOT more when the weather turns cold---which is starting to become the case as of late:thumbup: I eyeballed some books this summer and down loaded them onto my Kindle--I still like reading from a book but it's hard to beat the Kindle at times:o

Great reading ahead for you my friend and a BIG THANK YOU to Dan and Lemmy---very kind gestures from the two of you and down right fantastic members here on the best forum on the net;) GOOD on you Guys!!!

Jack, Myself and others had said it repeatedly---you my friend are so kind and deserving:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

Enjoy the gifts and the books:thumbup:

Hats of to all of you for making this the best forum!:thumb up:

A brotherhood of knife knuts who know no boundaries, even if there's an ocean in between!

Another reminder of the great people here - the givers and the receiver! That makes for a great Monday!

Yet another example of the uncommon generosity that's so commonplace here. Way to go, guys!

I really like what you did with that Opinel.
cheers and enjoy.
whats this about the weather getting cooler? It's getting warmer round these parts.:D

You deserve all that and much more, Jack. Thank YOU for all you do and contribute here!

Thanks a lot guys :)

Thanks Meako - I filed the blade to a spear point and shaped the handle to be as slim and straight as possible, closer to a standard jack. Then i cut the easy open notch. The wood is BLO'd and then scorched black and then sanded and oiled some more. I find that gives you a deep nutty black similar to ebony.

Fantastic work my friend, I thought it WAS ebony! You should post a tutorial, it's smooth as satin, VERY tactile
