I have noticed that people, myself included, tend to be very vocal when they have problems. When things go well, however, we often just sit back and enjoy them.

I wanted to write a quick post to thank (and highly recommend) "Uncle" Al Lawrence of Riverside Machine. He makes great products, and, more importantly, on those very rare occasions when something goes a bit wrong he corrects it immediately. Al is in the process of reworking something for me free of charge as I write. I just wanted to thank him publically.

I have been using his 2x72 grinder for over a year now and have no complaints. The only mod. I have done on it was to put a hardened 01 plate on the platen. It has all the horsepower I need and is very solidly built. If this one breaks I will either fix it or buy another, no regrets at all.

I couldn't agree more John!

Lots and lots of people now-a-days are more than ready to jump on a band-wagon for a good hanging... but few stop and say thanks.

And Al is GREAT! I've got plenty of goodies in the shop that I have picked up from him. His filing fixture is the best!

Another pat on the back for Uncle Al. A couple of years ago I managed to break my filing fixture doing something stupid. It was totally my fault and I sent it back and offered to pay what it cost to fix it. I got it back free of chrage, he even paid the shipping. You just can't beat that kind of service.

Well, he doesn't answer my e-mails.
I tried to buy a fileguide from him three times, but still no go.
It's almost like I have to beg him to take my money.

I've never dealt with Al, but I do know a lot of folks who don't check their email too often, etc. Pick up the phone and call and I bet you'll get a totally different picture.

I always call him vs. email. How many businesses are left that you can actually talk to the person that either designed and or built your piece of equipment. No phone menu trees, no answering service just Al on the other end.:D

Sorry to hear that. But I'm in Korea so calling is kind of hard. Al answered my email within 24 hrs.

Al is a great guy. He provide a good service for the knife making community. He also hosts a mini hammer-in on the second Thursday night of each month where he provide the equipment and dinner for anyone that whats to come.. Mastersmiths such as Jerry Fisk, Roger Massey, JR Cook, Mike Williams, Jerry Lairson, Ray Kirk and John Martin are usually all there to share information and conduct demo's.
