About a month and a half ago I had asked if any GRSs were available in the 22 inch length and received the last one HI had in the states. It was on the light side, about 36 ozs. I wanted one about 3 lbs. UB responded and said he would put in a special order for me. I then asked if they could do it Chiruwa handle style for more strength, and make the handle 6 to 7 inches so I could get two hands on it. Again they responded that they would try.

With all the problems UB had during the time that elapsed since then, I wasn't sure that the order would ever be filled. Well, it was and here are some pics. I am overjoyed and want to thank UB and Yangdu. I'm sure UB is logged on from heaven. For comparison is a normal 18 inch, 28 oz. GRS at the bottom.

Very nice! So, you got 2 Chiruwa GRS's? Did you already have one? I have a wood and a horn 22.5" models, both 42 oz's. but neither has the chiruwa handle. I really like the horn one you show.

Norm

Nice... 36 oz.? You must be cutting trees... BGRS, GRS are a khuk into themselves. I really like the wood one.

Uncle Bill and Yandu care about Customers. They sometimes refrained from special orders in fear of what might show up instead of what was desired.

Does anyone remember than bizarre AK Bowie with the loooong handle and real Short Blade??!!! LOL!

Yeah. I believe Not2Sharp has it. Probably pretty useful for brush work.

Brush work? That's a joke, right? Prying work. Root work. Tough knot work. Sweeping brush work? Naw. But you could probably lift someone's rib out of their chest cavity with it!!!

I mean brush work like being able to get the blade in underneath brush and such without cutting your hands all to pieces--blackberries, etc.

It was the goofiest thing, yet the more the owner stared at it, the more he decided to give it a try.

Not for everyone, though.

The other GRS I have is a "normal" non-Chiruwa model.

They both are very close to 50 oz. in weight. I specified not less than 41 oz, not more than 52 oz I believe. Yes, they are heavy but that is what I asked for, and with the longer handle I can use two hands.

I'm pretty sure now that I would not need, or want, anything heavier so this was a good exercise. It makes the 18 inch, 28 oz model feel like a featherweight. 25 inch, 4 pound AK - don't need it. It brackets then min and max weight I like in a Khuk. Minimum 20 oz, maximum 50 oz.; with 26 to 32 oz. as most preferred for general purpose chopping.

By the way, all 3 in the pics were made by Bura.

I like the idea of the Chiruwa handle on such a heavy blade, which will make them almost indestructible. Although I think Munk has done quite a bit of chopping with his 3 lb. Friendship model, so he should know by now if the standard handle has any loosening problems with the big blade. At 42 oz. both mine are about the max for me, and at 6 oz. less than 3 lbs. feel good. My FF is 49.5 ounces, and is just too heavy for me, but fun for a few swings anyway.

As far as I know, every GRS or BGRS I have ever seen is by Bura (although I have seen a couple of Villagers by other Kami's.)

Norm

With the exception of the originals made by Ganga Ram, I thought so too; but I think I saw one in the specials this week that was made by Kumar. I'll have to go look again.

Edited to add: Kumar made the villager that sold on 4/6. So there's at least one more kami in the GRS business. :)

My 22" GRS is also 41 oz.

3lbs = 48 oz. (I'm printing this for myself to look at and any other secretly challenged math forumites) The handle on the 'friendship' model I have has been taken down a bit, and is quite slender and narrow. It has not broken.

More importantly, I'd love to see a 42 oz model chopping alongside. I'm not sure if the Ganga Ram needs all of 3lbs to do it's work.

I wanted the traditional 3lb model so I wouldn't wonder the rest of my days about owning a lite veg drink when I could have had a V-8.

My 'light' AK, a 25" at 3lbs and change, is a cutting maniac.

Pretty sure it was a Villager. I have more BGRS's than almost any other model, and for some reason Bura has a lock on them. Still, I am waiting to see one in Chandan or Stag, two handle materials he has never used in that model. Horn, Bone, carved horn, wood, and silver mounted, he's done all those, but one in red chandan or stag would be gorgeous.

Sher has been cranking out some villager BGRS. Durned sharkes get to them before I do....

I have many khuks and the ONE I cannot seem to get my hands on is a full-sized 17-18" Villager BGRS. I don't care if it's wood or horn. I finally e-mailed Yangdu about it this week, as I had not wanted to bother her before, and asked for just a "Villager BGRS", and she said she had one and I was thrilled. Turns out it is a 15" in wood. It's a nice little model and the price was certainly right, but I want one that is 17 or 18" and between 28 and 30 oz. There has been some real beauties, but I just can't seem to snag them.

Something to shoot for anyway...!

Norm,

I know what you mean. I have a BGRS that is a dream. Uncle Bill detailed it as a " 17" 22oz. GRS by Bura. Nice carved horn handle. Small superglue fix crack. $85 " when I bought it last summer.

I have a hard time with name favorite anythings. I have the collector/addict personality. Almost anything can be my favorite, for awhile. But his size just sings...
