I've gotten pretty spoiled of late, since all my Spyderco knives have been seriously sharp out of the box. Well, I just bought a knife from a different manufacturer that was downright dull out of the box. Nice knife -- well made, solid lock-up, good fit and finish -- but the edge was not sharp.

So, I went back and re-read Joe Talmadge's knife sharpening FAQ; then I searched this forum for any additional hints on sharpening ATS-34. It took me a couple of days, working on and off as time allowed, using my GATCO Tri-Seps (please Santa, bring me a Sharpmaker 204!) first on one side, then the other, and back again until I raised a burr on one side; then I worked the other side until I raised a burr on that edge. A few more light strokes on each side and I am pleased to announce that we are now shaving sharp.

So, thanks to all for your help. In return, I offer a little discovery of my own: if you're using a Tri-Seps on a small knife, place the blade of your knife along one of the corners (including the rounded corner, but not the flat sides) of the Tri-Seps such that the side of the blade is resting on the rubber end and the edge of the blade is resting on the ceramic. Just sort of let it settle in there; the side of the blade will be touching the rubber somewhere up towards the spine. When you draw the knife down the sharpener, you will be following the existent bevel (confirmed by magic marker). This has worked well for me. Of course, YMMV.
