I just picked up one of those H.F Russian made 110lbs anvils which is now sitting on a temporary stump till I find something taller for it...so, it has a high ring to it when struck..how can I deaden that ring down (yes I have earplugs) since I live in a residential area with the High Troll Priestess next door who would love call the P.D and lodge complaints since her father lost to me at city council:thumbup: ...the only thing I can come up with so far is to wrap the base and center with lead strips:confused: ?

Help.....

Once you get a high enough base and your happy with it and you make darn sure its what you want get yourself a tube of construction adhisvise and glue the anvil to the base. Let it sit for a day before you start using it. I've got a Swedish Made anvil that use to drive me nuts with its ring. It don't ring no more.

Is the ring from undamped vibration or natural frequency?

You can always add mass to the system (other side of anvil or bottom to change the natural frequency, you can even bolt on plates)

I also agree with bolting it down. Couple heavy - 1/2" thick X about 3 inch wide - straps of steel and some long lag bolts. Then you can remove them if you want to relocate your set-up.
As an immediate fix, tape a magnate to the bottom of your horn. I say tape because it will slide down from hammering vibration.

Buy several welding magnets from HF. Stick them on different places to try and break up the harmonics in the vibrations.Under the bick and under the heel seem to help a lot.Nothing will take the "BING" out of the hammer blow completely.

I use about 20 ft of chain wrapped around the trunk of the anvil.... seems to work ok for now........ think i'd like to try the glue method...

here is a "Trick" for toning the ring down a lot
go to H.F and buy a couple of "Pickup" magnet's the stronger the better like a 50 lb up and put them under the horn / heel they strong magnet's usually don't come off easily .the magnet's also work well for holding blade's or whatever for grinding :D

What Ray said, all of these fix's work but the glue work very well.

Guys

Mike Fitzgerald showed me this one and it works like a charm. Put a small rare earth magnet, toroidal shape (i.e looks like a donut) works best, on the bottom side of the horn tip. A magnet the size of a dime or smaller will dampen out almost all the ring.

I got tired of magnetizing everything I forged.I forged a hook to fit into the pritchel hole that hangs off the tail of the anvil out of the way.Attached a weight with a cord to the hook.No more resonance, period.
