So I got some tritium thumbstuds by TAD gear ( ) They are the matte finish, however I am hoping that there is a way to give them a dark, black oxide finish. Any Suggestions?

Thanks Guys

The only thing that springs to mind is to anodize it. Not sure if you can hit black, maybe a dark color though. Might want to practice some first.

Look at this site:

http://mrtitanium.com/

On the left side click on the "how to...", then select "build anodizer" and "anodize titanium". Be bloody careful if you follow his instructions. Some of those voltages are potent.

I know a guy who's family owns a coating business:

I think it's WAY too expensive to get done just for thumb studs though.
I bet you're looking at $50 to get them coated.

Ya i dont think you can go black with an anodizer. i was wondering if there was some sort of chemical that might do it in addition to using an abrasive perhaps

I don't know of any DIY chemical treatment that will produce a black oxide layer on Ti.

The only black coatings for Ti I can think of aside from paint take a vacuum chamber to produce.

MAXPOWER,
Could you please send me the E-mail address where you got those Thumb Studs ? or maybe post it on this site!

Thanks,

What metal are you trying to turn black?

I read it as Titanium. Is it Ti or stainless?

The Caswell kit should work on stainless. Won't work on Ti.

Isnt tritium a radioactive isotope that they use for things like glow in the dark watch markings or sights on guns and stuff like that, has a 12 yr half life (i got a S&W watch thats what it said lol)

yep thats correct 12.35 year halflife yup firearm optics

Thanks fdd19,

I think they are stainless on Tadgear.com (where i purchased them from, armalite, you can also just google tritium thumbstuds and it will be the first one up) it says they are PRECISION MILLED 316 SS 2 PART BODY I am somewhat of a newb when it comes to tinkering, but i am pretty sure that 316 ss is stainless steel

fdd19, do you have any experience with that plating kit? i am wondering how durable it is. Do you think i would have to protect the tritium wile doing it, so it doesnt get the solution on it? or would that not matter? would i have to do any pre-fab to the surface of the thumbstud, like sanding, or sandblast
