That cheap knife you never buy

The knife I want to get over any other is the BK2.
Yeah, it's not that expensive, something I should be able to just pull the trigger on, but I seem to be a poorer college student than the average poor college student. Honestly, I have no idea how people join fraternities and such, those things suck you dry.

Anyways, as I've been collecting knives, I have realized that the only knives I really care about are the ones I use and abuse. The knives I come closest to are the ones I carry. To me, I really own a knife if it has both cut me at some point in time and I've used it enough to tear off the factory edge and I've sharpened it. It took my tomahawk a year to cut me while I was fixing up the edge with a file, so that was a weird exception.

So hopefully, by Feb, I will own, love, and use a BK2. My plan is to purchase myself one after Christmas.

To the point of this topic, this is my weird knife that doesn't cost much, yet I haven't picked up yet. How many of you guys have experienced this? For me, it's the BK2 and Mora.

I can definitely sympathize with you on the poor college kid. Personally I buy many of my Beckers off of amazon when i sell my text books back haha, I have also won a few in contests (16,14) Hang in there. The 2 was the first Bcker I bought and it is the reason I bought more. It is a hell of a knife.

In college, I donated plasma for beer. Had I known how great it would be to get into knives, I would have spent more money on them at the time. That being said, go hook your arm up to a machine and get a BK2 and a Mora (I have the Companion, in carbon steel, and it's a delightful knife for the money).

I just received my BK2 yesterday; love at first site. Do it.

I got the BK2 and the 9 at the same time, the 9 is probably my favorite knife I own. Moras always seemed kinda flimsy to me so I never gave them much attention until recently. Ordered a mora companion a couple weeks ago and really like it. I'll be ordering a few more of those to keep in the vehicles. It took me forever to get around to ordering a heavy warthog that I had been drooling over.

I have so many knives in my online cart waiting to come home I can't remember them all or even how many off the top of my head, most of them roughly $60 or less. My short list is pretty long. I think the biggy is the cold steel bushman or bowie bushman. Had the bowie and loved it but gave it to a really good friend on out last camping trip we took together before I moved to CO and he moved to WA. I'd like to get one of each eventually but I just never do, I always seem to order something more expensive.

I agree with you hoss the 9 Is also my favorite knife. It is just pure awesomeness. However there is something magical about the 2. I keep it in my vehicle. The 2 provides an incredible piece of mind. Its like a security blanket :) Makes me feel nice and warm inside.

CRKT keydashi. 21 bucks or so. i dont think id ever really need it, dont think its very practical, but i do think it looks cool.

The remora (bk13) was on my list until recently. i was very skeptical in getting the remora. its a cheap small knife. i decided i didnt want one a while ago. but the bk9 sheath having a spot for it made in kind of forced me to get it. now im glad i got it. it is small, smaller even than what it looks like on paper, lighter too. but this thing shaves hair and paper with very little effort.

Normally if i want a knife i get it as soon as i have the spare coin, so if its cheap i normally get it quiker. if i dont get a knife that im wanting, its normally because it will serve no purpose other than looking cool. Thats a big reason i got on the becker bandwagon. pure function.

One of the benefits of BK&T knives is that they are so low cost, but if you are having trouble scraping together the scratch for that, here is what I would do.

Keep your eyes peeled here for the various contests that are open to everyone. Sometimes there are some pretty simple ones that pop up that don't require much in the way of anything other than an "I'm in, thanks for the chance!" that will net you at the very least one of the small ones. At time same time work on getting your Beckerhead number. That can be done pretty easily. Then, once you get small BK&T and your number, participate in one of the official challenges or giveaways and get you a bigger one. Rinse, repeat, until you have the one you want. I'll be honest, I would much rather see a BK&T knife go to someone that can't afford one but wants it and will use it than it go to someone that already has 3 of that knife that doesn't have a use for it. Oregon Fal'er recently stated what I think most of us do, and that is give away a goodly number of the knives we win. I know I have given away all but 1 of the knives I have won. (Or the missus stole them.) Just hang out, participate, and sooner or later there is a pretty good chance you will get a knife. Even if not, you will still have a great place to hang out until you can save up enough to get one of your own.

And after looking at your info, whereabouts in WV are you? Morgantown?

I got a BK14 just for shaving "The Guyon" into my chest hair. Moose is a twisted guy...

Just take it out of one month's entertainment budget: don't eat out, don't go the bars, don't see any movies, skip a few dates, and you will have $60.

You forgot the part about where you cut yourself with it. That seems to be a big part of your routine... :eek:

Actually, AlexWitte talked about giving blood -- you do the same thing -- it just doesn't go to anyone! :D

Hang in there, Bud. :-) I know how you feel, not having alot of funds. My best advice:Be patient, hang in there, and stash cash when and wherever you can. Then, when you have the neccessary amount of funds (or more) make a pick, roll the dice, and hope it pans out for you. You might also consider an 11. Hehe..read some of my posts on here, you'll see..it's a good one too..and you can get them for around 30 bucks or less. Mr.Becker's a good guy too, and the Beckerheads are a good and amusing bunch.

Yea, I've often drooled over expensive knives...an Israeli D2 Dustar for one. (Have no need for it, would never likely use it, but it was sure a pretty knife!) A piece of advice from one funds-challenged guy to another, if you're going to invest in something, make sure it's something you WILL use, CAN abuse, and CAN take with you places :-). But you already seem to have tha philosophy down quite well ;-).

The remora (bk13) was on my list until recently.

I picked up one of these (the keydashi) at a show about a year and a half ago, its more like functional jewelry than a knife. At the time, I remembered thinking there was some reason I wasn't ever going to buy another skeletonized blade, but it was an impulse buy, and I seem to recall getting change back from a $20. A couple of days later I remembered why I had a self imposed boycott on blades with big holes in them, they get tangled up in stuff when you try to cut soft, runny, messy stuff, especially food prep or when field dressing small game. The other weird thing about it is its chisel ground (sort of a necessity given the way the blade holder/sheath is made), not bad for right hand use, but the angle fights you if you grab it with the left hand. Bottom line, I like the handle and blade shape, if it were a solid blade with a non-chisel grind, and in a kydex sheath, it would be perfect at its price point... but then it would functionally more or less be a BK13. :)

Not like I've got buyers remorse or anything, but I stopped carrying/wearing it once the novelty wore off. I know I'd use it more if it were a BK13.

Thanks for the post, It does look like a decent necklace, for looks, but I doubt id ever use it so more than likely i ill never get one. my bk11 was a good looking functional neck knive. but soon it will be an amazing piece of very functional jewelry too.... yea im about to explode just waiting to see it :)

Oh wow, this got a lot of responses, thanks all!

@Nsvens89
Unfortunately for me, I never sell off my textbooks. I'm a math major, and those books are important for reference later (I'm in one of the few undergrads that do comprehensive exams).

@AlexWitte
Typically I just donate blood, I don't get money from that. Next time I'm in Pittsburgh, I'm going to have to look into a facility for that, perhaps sperm donation as well...

@bigghoss
The Cold Steel Bushman is awesome. My roommate has one. We typically take some stuff out to throw for fun, my Cold Steel Trail Hawk, and a few of his axes and misc., including the Bushman.

@worldwood
That CRKT looks pretty nice. I have a Kommer 30-30, got it when it was on clearance at Cabelas. I really like CRKT's 1.4116 steel, though to be fair I haven't really sharpened it because I haven't used it enough to justify it in my mind.

@DerekH
I'll definitely have to keep my eyes open for the open to everybody contests. Working on my post count, but typically that is slow for me due to my lurking nature. It's the curse of the introverted.
I'm actually about an hour from Morgantown. I go to college at Bethany College, a small liberal arts college.

@amp281
Ha, I never go to the bar. I make my own beer.

@K9-Handler
I keep superglue around at all times.

@bored2deth
Well, I'm going to admit to something here. I play D+D. And the dice hate me. :grumpy:
But yeah, I'm saving a little money here and there.
...dice...

Just found another piece on my amazon cart that I could never get myself to purchase. A 5.11 Wharn for Duty. Looks like a neat little knife, and I'm a climber and all, but I would rather do something else with the $30...

Well, given those statements, if you feel like making a 4+ hours drive straight south, give me and ThePointyEnd a call, we are going to be shooting for getting out more, especially once it gets warmer. Also, Pointy makes beer, and we are both nerds.

I'm no snob. I'll buy a good, inexpensive knife as fast as a pricier model.
Right now, on a certain auction site, you can get a Mora Craftline Robust for $15 shipped.
Crazy amount of value for your money.

Also, if you pull it out near Moose, he'll caress your inner thigh and show you how the sheath integrates with your button fly jeans. Right, Saturated Shadow? :D

I don't play D&D or any of those but I'm a pretty big nerd. I watch so much syfi channel and I'm a huge Felicia Day fan. I spent two hours shopping thinkgeek.com and almost ordered a pair of 8-bit sunglasses and a replica of Malcom Renolds' pistol.

Quite true.

Normally I would be rather uncomfortable with a guy doing that, but I hear that's how Moose greets everyone when he first meets them.

Luckily, my pant fasten with a snap.

:D
