Well after four months grinding the gloves are off

Yea my fingers are toasty.
I will tell you it has made a big difference in the quality of my grind lines though.
I was grinding with gloves wrapped in tape and getting the tape so hot it turned black. I was also getting really uneven grind lines and couldn't control the rate of rise to save my life.
After watching Allen Blade's video several times it started to make sense. (Scarry)
I now stop after each pass and look. Takes a little longer but wow I actually am starting to do better.
Sure helps with the old self confidence issue.

Bob,
I have always ground blades with gloves off. You just have better "feel" and control. I guess grinding in gloves is kinda like having sex in a "raincoat". It works but not quite as smooth.

I removed my gloves for good after I caught the tip of one pinky in between the belt and the top contact wheel, thus sucking all the fingers of my left hand into my sander (fargin' ouch). I too found I had much better sensitivity resulting in cleaner grinds.

Good luck,

Hugh

Scraped, burnt, sliced, smashed. AHHHH, knifemaking!!!!

I learned to grind with no gloves, and I see no reason to grind with gloves on. Not only can you grind with more accuracy, but you can tell when to lay off when the heat builds up too much. My way of thinking, if the steel is getting too hot to touch, its probably doing some damage to the temper of the blade. I may be wrong, but why take a chance?

I never wear gloves when grinding. I think it's safer without them. Gloves tend to make you feel too secure and that's a recipe for an accident.

I grind without gloves and dunk the blade in a pail of water next to the grinder whenever I feel heat building up. Grind, dunk, inspect... it becomes a rhythm.

I agree grinding with gloved hands is like playing guitar with gloved hands... It doesnt work well:-).. What I do when grinding bevels though is use cut off glove fingers on my thumb!! I keep it kind of wet and it is easier for me than dunking on every pass..
I feel like such a wuss now...HA!!!

No gloves, sleeves, jewelry or neckties ever near grinding wheels or any other rotating equipment for scruff! Some years ago I was working in a machine shop. One of the guys who did welding was wearing gloves while grinding some angle iron on a 12" wheel. I saw his glove kinda' drop on the floor. I was bending over to pick it up and he fainted almost on top of me. His wedding ring finger and wedding ring were in the glove and that's no baloney. The glove got caught and apparently the ring cocked severing his finger. The wheel spit it all out on the floor.

Similar story without the disastrous results. One day, I decided to go out in the shop and look around for something, but once I got in there, the urge to grind on something took over. I didnt bother to take off my neck knife, which happened to be one of R.J. Martin's mini Kozukas with the carbon fiber magnet sheath. Humorous results instead of the possible injuries from wearing something around my neck. I looked down a few minutes later, and the whole sheath was covered in metal dust! Took damn near forever to get all that stuff off my sheath. I learned my lesson though, and never wear rings or anything jewelry related in the shop.

This is a little off the topic, but I'll never forget an incident in my office about 15 years ago. An employee was putting paper in a large paper shredder and his necktie caught in the cutting wheel. The necktie was chewed right up the the guy's neck and almost strangled him before someone managed to turn off the machine.
