Have any of your guys noticed that delightfull new emerson smell? It is very distinct. My friend who is not into knives or weapons of any sort but who has shot my ar and 1911 a feww times, commented that "that guy who makes these knives probably has alot of guns right around where makes he the knives, this thing smells dangerous" It was pretty funny. Anyway, my new emerson is my first commander, What a fantastic design. My first emerson was a socfk, which was stolen. I tried to restrain myself from buying another emerson right away, due to budgeting reasons, but I was powerless again the call of the commander, it's a tough life really. I hate to say it but the fit and finish on my serial numbered socfk was definitely better than on the commander, my blade is nicely centered in the handle, but the g10 overhangs the liners all the way around. Nitpicking really, but if benchmade can get em perfect, why can't emerson? All trifles aside this is my favorite knife ever. OOOOooo that smell...

Oh yeah I just remembered, what's up with the wimpy looking stop pin? I know reasonably that there's no way to ever bend it with normal opening and closing of the knife, it just looks wimpy...

When I told the Emerson folks that the scales on my new Commander did not fit the liners the reply was "well there nothing we can do as it's not a custom knife... you shouldn't expect it to be perfect"

PahLeeuzzzz. Give me a break. Emerson will never be able to compete with MT and BM with that attitude. Geeze, these knives cost over $200.00!

My Spydercos (Ever handled a Viele for example? but even lower-end models) and Microtechs piss all over both Emerson and Benchmade in terms of fit and finish. In fact, the liner/scale overhang is just as bad on my Mini Stryker as it is on my CQC-7B. Of course, these are user knives, so I really don't much care but...

"Not a custom knife" my ass. The G-10 on my Starmate is so well cut and put together that it looks like a one-piece handle. I mean, how is sloppy fit even possible with computer controlled CNC manufacturing and laser cutting technologies? Must be the person doing the design / programming the CNC then, no?

I know this thread has gotten away from the original post, but I think there are some valid concerns here. I just looked at my 7B, and the G-10 fits well, for the most part. I hadn't even noticed before I looked to see how it fit. What concerns me is the attitude, "it's not custom, you can't expect it to be perfect". I own one Emerson, with two more on the way, and this attitude that one can only expect perfection if one can afford a custom really concerns me. Anyone else have thoughts on this?

I have a strong opinion on this subject. Having done business with the Emersons for some years now I have never encountered anything other than a helpful and respectful attitude. The Emersons produce a very special product and have great pride in their work. Their success and prominence seem to have excited strong emotions in some quarters and some people will go out of their way to badmouth them. Their product, their customer service and their attitude is really a model about how a business should be run and attributed statements indicating indifference towards their customers just do not sound like the people that I know and respect.

Well,

I have never been disappointed in Ernie or his products. In his defense, keep in mind that his production company is still pretty young, while the others mentioned have been around a bit longer. I also do not know how many employees he has, but we are always pressuring him to produce MORE! of EVERYTHING! made available NOW!. So, in his desire to increase production to keep us happy, maybe some QC problems come up.

I spend a lot of time reading all the other forums and nobody seems to be as demanding as the folks here. We just seem to be so greedy and whiny so much.

I know I am rambling, but coming from a line of blue collar workers who were able to become successful business owners, I can really sympathize with the Emersons here. Maybe they were trying to produce more than what their production skills could handle in order to meet our demands? Maybe they are trying to keep the operation small to reduce overhead, but resulting in more worker fatigue and QC problems. There is just so much involved.

In all honesty, I don't know if I would have done anything about the knife with slightly oversized scales either. In my opinion, their denial of that small complaint is no big deal. I have seen posts here of people sending knives back for some incredibly trivial reasons, and they have all been taken care of...

Usual Suspect In Training

Please let me clarify my situation. The knife in question was not even a production knife from a dealer. It was an Emerson Custom production in that it was a Commander that was ordered from Emerson with blue liners. When I got the knife I was surprised that the blade was not centered and the G-10 scales did not fit properly. I sent it back. When the knife was returned to me I was told...nicely that the blade though less off-center than before was as good as it was going to get and the scales, which still did not match the liners were as good as they were going to get. I was told that I should not expect better from a production knife.

Let me say that I really like the people at Emerson, Diane and Peggy are ALWAYS nice as can be. But I am simply relating what actually happened to me. I don't have it out for Emerson. I am sure that there must be others out there that have had the same experience as this seems to be SOP at Emerson. They have a great knife in that Commander but they are sorely lacking in the QA department. This does not mean that they are not nice people, they are.
The fact is that other companies out there have much better QA for their product. If we don't let the feedback get to Emerson they will simply no longer be there someday. That would be a loss to us all. I also feel that if what I have to say is truthful I should feel free to relate it to the group. There should be no sacred cows.

Thanks,

Ben

Amen. Let me first say I am a diehard Emerson fan, but the QC definitely could use a once over. My last CQC-7 I purchased (my third) had the scales extending a good 1/32 of an inch over the liners. True, after a few hours with the dremmel and a sanding bit, I had perfectly lined up scales and a satin finish on the edge of the liners, but how hard is it to do at the factory? I am not looking for perfect, but at $200 for the average Commander or Mach-1, my Microtech full size SOCOM has it beat hands down on fit and finish. Maybe put out a few less knives each year and spend a little more time at the factory.
