Let me start by sayin' that ever since the resurgence of the Swayback Jack with the Bose/Case collaboration release a while back, I've always wanted one, never even heard of the pattern till recently.

Recently I won a Case Chestnut Bone CV Swayback Jack in a giveaway from Brutus013 a forum member here at BFC.

I was excited to be gettin' a new knife, especially one I've been lusting over, (maybe lusting's to strong a word, more like, wanted really bad) anyway to make a longer story short, the knife arrived in the mail and I rushed to open the envelope and examine my new knife.

It was pocket worn :) with a deep natural patina and shavin' sharp, I was ecstatic, I went over every inch and was very pleased with the F&F, (heck it was a free knife, I'm not gonna complain) considerin' all the bad press Case has gotten over the years, I won't even consider buyin' a Case knife unless I can examine it first, this one was a gooder in my book.

As I wrapped my fingers around it it felt right...familiar, that one thought drove me crazy for two days, familiar, why did it feel so dang familiar, I've never held a Swayback Jack that I recall, yet this pattern has been in my hands many times before, it was the most intense feelin' of Deja Vu I've ever experienced.

The familiarity of this knife was hauntin' me and I couldn't figure out why, why in the dark my fingers knew the curves of the handle, it just felt right.

Then the other day as I was roundin' up the various EDC knives left around the house`durin' their use all week long, I found this little puppy, which had been in my pocket just about a month ago, (how quick I forget) my little 20+ year old Frost Cutlery Black Hawk II, I had bought this knife when I first move to PA in the mid 80s.

This little knife was a constant companion and found it's way into my pocket most mornings I went to work. This knife always felt right in my hand also, the ergonomics are evident the moment ya grasp the knife, that's when it dawbed on me why the Case Swayback Jack felt so familiar, I'd held it in my hand many times before in the incarnation of that lil' ol' Frost Knife.

Mystery solved, although it does make me wonder what other ghost knives my hands remember, what other patterns elicit stong memories when I grasp them?

The very first time I ever held a sway back I thought it felt like the old hawkbill knives I remember from way back. I can only guess, but I think the way back origins of the SB are agrarian in nature. Some English garden knife or farmers tool. The handle and blade set up feel like they are really meant to be used pulling back toward you like when cutting something from a stalk in a field or orchard.

Carl.

Ya know it's funny Carl but the more I think about the pattern and you just mentionin' The Hawkbill, (pruner) reminded me of my Grandfathers knife that my cousin had given to me six years ago, he had used to cut up peppers and onions to go with our smoked bacon and ryebread for lunch oh so many (30+) years ago.

It shows me that that familiar feelin' with that pattern goes way back to my youth even.

I'm glad to see you enjoying the knife, there's nothing better than finding a new knife that brings back old memories. The other knives posted look great as well, I don't think you can go wrong with any knife built on that frame

The SBJ just seems to melt in my ( largish ) hands as well I really have grown quite fond of the pattern and EDC mine regularly. I really love case's CV and the natural patina it can gain over time which IMO is a great bonus.
