That one bad experience that totally ruined the brand for you.

We've all done it. Tried something other than the usual for whatever reason. Looks, price, reading about the knife, recommendation you name it. And then when you got it, wow, what a disappointment. I've got one that stands out in the memory banks but won't discuss until we see how this goes. Hint: initials are CS.

Emerson.

Owned two Benchmade 970. When I lost the second one Emerson was selling their own. I think this was 2004 maybe.
Anyway. The 970 was a great knife and I was real excited to see how much better the “ real thing” would be.

Never owned another.

I haven't had firsthand experience with a knife that was so bad that I swore off a brand, but I remember being on the forum when the Zero Tolerance announced the 0777 and being excited about the radically different design. Then Microtech released their blatant knockoff at an even higher price, and Tony Marphony insulted the intelligence of the knife collecting community by concocting some ridiculous story about how he was given verbal permission to copy the design. So that certainly turned me off of the Microtech brand.

I hear ya, but you're missing out. Once they started putting the right springs in them, the Launch series is fantastic
My thought as well, fortunately I looked up the different models before I bought and found out about when they fixed that issue. The 4 that I have are fitted with springs that keep the blade under tension for the entire range of motion, so even if the blade did bounce back the spring would just push it back into the locking position.

The large Sebenza 31 nearly "cured" me of my CRK addiction due to the heavy detent and "Sebenza thumb". But, it turned out that I really dig the Inkosi. Wouldn't have bought an Inkosi if the 31 wasn't such a bear to break in.

It all worked out in the end, and they are still getting my money.

MOD, Masters of Defense. The worst knife I ever bought. Plunge lock was sticking and wouldn’t disengage without tapping it with something. Sent it back for warranty work and it looked like some took a Dremel to the plunge lock shaft when they returned it. They are no longer in business, thank goodness.

Spyderco. After years of owning a tiny butterfly. Losing it and moving forward in life. Decade later, I wanted a Spyderco. Seeing how they gained traction and grew.

So I ordered one of their Japanese made in Hap40 laminated. Stabilized wood scales. Big.

When it showed up. The blade was so far off center. It was sheet of paper thickness from rubbing the scale. Plus, the steel they used on top of Hap40 is almost silver soft. It'll take a deep scratch.

Refused to carry my new knife. Heart broken. Disgusted.

Fast forward for some time. I begin seeing more marketing for Spyderco. With other people praising the brand. So I gave Spyderco a second chance. Now, I have nice Spyderco knives, and complete trash of Spyderco knives.

I guess I rolled the dice wrong(?)

Never had that experience but I don't buy knives from custom makers or any brand's high zoot knives. I've never had an issue of note with Buck, Mora, Fallkniven, Benchmade, Victorinox/Wenger, Wusthoff, which is pretty much the breadth of what I own. I'm not a hard use guy and treat the knives I own with respect.

Fällkniven. Chippy knife that just chipped away. When I asked Fällkniven they said I was poo poo head and that I’m wrong.
Absolutely love their designs (carry an R2 scout in Elmax as we speak) and LOVE the look of laminated steel but VG10 + an ultra thin edge is just a recipe for disaster. Brittle steel + very little material = a side of chips with your entree 😄

To me the stronger detent is a win. On one of my 21's the detent i so weak it slightly opened on me just by carrying in waistband and walking around.

Love my FK's. Not a big fan of the X series and I wish my A1 had a bit of a tougher steel in the core. But the VG10 has never given me any trouble despite very hard use. Guess I havent hit steel or rocks yet.. 🤷🏻

I bought a Zeiba knife, it was horrible, the action, the lockup; it was a number of years ago but ill never buy another....

This was the last straw. Zero trust in the product means I wouldn't even take one as a gift.
