That time when I used 1 knife for almost 10 days

My friends invited me to their vacation house on an island.

They just bought it, it's pretty much in nature and they possibly needed to do some stuff there as they didn't know if previous owner even left them furniture.

My initial plan was to take my Warcraft tanto, ESEE 3 and either Boker GoBag or Viper Berus 1.

But things don't always go as planned, and I did pack in my Warcraft, but I also took it out to add some more things (it was in the way), and then I forgot to put it back in my luggage.
And I also woke up late so I forgot to just toss a smaller knife in my pocket before I left.

So, all I had was ESEE 3 and Fallkniven DC4 pocket sharpener.

I used this knife for everything, it didn't leave my pocket. I was opening food with it, prepping food with it, I even used it to spread pate or cheese on my bread as they only had plastic knives there. I also took it on our camping, I used it to cut fishing strings, cords, rope, clean and prep fish for cooking or grilling... and I used it to cut my food too.

Out of 6 people, only I had a knife, unless you count box cutters, leatherman and SAK's. They had few box cutters, one guy had a leatherman, one girl and one other guy had Victorinox SAK. I had an ESEE.

So, yes, it can be done.

Handle is comfortable, edge retention is more than good enough, and I didn't even have corrosion issues. Few swipes on a stone that I'd do anyways to sharpen the blade - and staining is gone. Finger choil is also suprisingly helpful for some tasks.

It is small enough and big enough at the same time, it's full flat grind and thin enough to be amazing slicer (it would definitely glide through food better if there was no coating). It is also tough enough for wood processing.

That's a well rounded knife.
Comfortable to use, good edge retention and really easy to sharpen once it does get dull, nice ergonomics and good blade geometry, and blade size is just right there to make it versatile.

I'll also probably get a SAK myself, but I kinda keep delaying that purchase, and even I don't know why.

Also, Fallkniven DC4 is also a great pocket sharpener. It's compact and very simple to use. It also won't ruin your edge as "pull through" sharpeners that they're using. I didn't want those things even near my ESEE.

I carried and used the same Buck 110 exclusively everyday for 30 years. Never felt deprived. In fact I’m certain I had a better knife with me than 99.9% of the people around me.

A buck 110 is all the knife I need, the rest are just for fun.

3 years it was a combo of a SOG Pentagon Elite and Wenger Nomad.

That's impressive guys!

This just further confirms it that we don't need to have numerous knives. Some are better than some others for specific tasks, but 2 or max 3 knives are guaranteed to cover you completely.

I mean, to me it was mind boggling that I opened boxes, cut carpets, stripped some wires, carved and cut wood... and also cleaned fish, prepped food and even spread pate on my bread with the same knife. I just gave it a good wash each time it got dirty, and few swipes on a stone when I needed to touch-up the edge.

Now I really think you can't fully appreciate the knife without using it.

A couple years ago, aside from kitchen chores, I used only my Lionsteel Shuffler for daily carry (and of course a Vic) for 6 or 7 months. It had been many years since I’d gotten by without a locking blade, but it wasn’t long before I thought twice about it.
It’s like riding a bicycle 👍

I can't compete with eveled eveled and his 30 year streak with a Buck 110 but I've been know to carry a knife for years when I find one I love.

My longest streak? When the Endura gen 3 dropped in the late 90s, I carried that VG-10 Endura exclusively for a good 5 years. I then grabbed a few Delicas for when I wanted a smaller blade.

When the Ontario Rat 1 in D2 dropped years ago, I carried that for a long time as well. That is one reason I will probably never stop recommending it as a budget blade on this forum.

I used my yellow delrin Case Slimline trapper in CV during 8 years in USAF missile maintenance. Opening boxes, stripping wire & you name it..., opening box nasties (box lunches packed for our 18 hour shift) not MREs. 1971-1978. That knife was retired after 40 years of use. I have since moved on to other knives although I have another as a replacement.

My longest streak was my Sere 2K - almost 20 years it was all I carried. Still carry it once in a while, but rotated with others.

I see this might be the inspiration for Cold Steel’s counter tac knives. Nice blade there. Looks well used and maintained.

How many used the same knife for that period of time for every cutting task you encountered with no other knives or cutting tools used for anything? That includes food prep, eating, etc.

Try to go 30 days using only one knife for everything, not just as your EDC. It's a challenge!

I think if you are at your house, technically your kitchen knives are your EDC, they live in the kitchen every day lol.

Hah! For most people outside of the knife knerd world, I'll bet the only knives they use are cheap kitchen knives.

I'm the opposite ... I use what I am carrying in the kitchen too!

If we’re being honest, I guess 90% of our “EDC city needs” could be done by a box cutter, AKA the ordinary dude’s OTF. :D

If we're being honest, we would admit that we, the obsessed and afflicted knife nuts, are the 1% of 'society' that actually carries a knife beyond some keychain size thing or box cutter. The humble little Victorinox classic is the worlds most popular selling pocket knife and sales of it pass all the other knife companies by many millions of knives actually sold on the world wide market.

Heck, most people nowadays, don't bother to carry any knife at all. When we fly down to Key West for family vacations, I carry a little SAK classic I mailed to myself at the hotel, for a week with no problems at all. It cuts bait, opens cold beers, slices small Key limes for cold vodka tonics, open plastic packages, and snips price tags off souvenir T-shirts. When I fy out, I just give it to the airport shuttle driver.

Fanboys of all kinds have a very skewed vision of real life. Gun nuts, car nuts, knife nuts, whatever.
