I have been wanting a "slick" for some time. A slick is a large wood chisel, about 2-3" across, maybe 8" long, with a socket and handle like a short shovel or entrenching tool. I could forge one but I am at best a very inexpert smith and so I wonder, what would BirGhorka want for such a tool?

Let me point out that slicks are widely used in boatbuilding or repair, by log home builders, really anyone who needs to master a large piece of wood. If you presented it to the right newsgroups (or forums?) it could become a staple item and a good seller.

If you need a model, I will provide one gladly!

Okay, in due course... Here is one on ebay, the version I have in mind would have half the blade and twice the handle.

I can't tell if this one tapers in width from the front of the blade to the back, but a slight taper allows one to reach into corners a bit better. Certainly it has a relatively shallow cross-section with the sides of the blade faired down to a thin edge.

Ah, well. Give me about three years (or less)... I'd better do some good stuff around the house before I try to get away with designing and buying *another* tool!

I got one of those... it was my grandfathers. I think I am the only person in my family that knows what it is.

It is good to know how to use good ole tools. (Everyone in my family dosent know what they are looking at while I sit in the corner and trade'em $5 for a priceless piece of history.);) :D

This topic reminds to mention that it has occurred to me (while chopping with the AK)that the people who do old-fashioned timber-framing might be interested in the choppers like the AK or GRS. They certainly appreciate good tools. Some of them might be tempted to try a khuk instead of a hatchet. There must be some newsletter or something one could put an add in. A picture of wooden "ferris wheel" should catch their eye.
