You've all heard it.. "A survival knife is the one you have with you" You've also heard it the folks who say things like.. I carry a 1/4 inch thick 10 inch long grim reaper 8000, but I could get by with just a sak..
well here's a challenge that will test out these theories..

the challenge is as follows
perform the following tasks to effect survival using only a folding knife, and what you can fit in the pockets of a standard pair of pants.. (not cargo's or bdu's Think Jeans), and your environment.

1) construct a shelter
2) make fire
3) devise a method of water purification
4) construct a trapline of a minimum of 5 traps.
5) divise a signal method for potential rescue

YOU DONOT HAVE TO CAMP OUT FOR THIS (although you get kudos if you do) in fact this can be done in an afternoon in your yard

Photo documentation of every skill as well as pocket contents, and rationales is required. pics of terrain would also be nice

the winner recieves, a 16 inch Fiddleback Machete with Leather sheath.

Submissions must be in by the last day of FEB.. selection will be done based on random selection of qualifying entries on March 1st
This is a chance to showcase some skills, and knowledge, so have fun, and be creative.
Good luck

Gonna keep my eye on this one, hopefully I can find the time to put something together. Cool contest RR.

So, just to clarify the spirit of the contest, I have a question.

Take our EDC, pocket carry stuff out and perform all of your tasks?

The only thing I'm tempted to fudge on, meaning above and beyond what's normally in my pockets, is a container to boil water, and a hank of some kind of cordage.

This will been fun though, because my edc is configured the way it is because of an actual semi-survival (un-planned adventure, lol)situation I was in a few years ago.

Also, does all of this have to been done on the same day,or can we peck away at the list of tasks when we get time?

Just to clarify.. this does not have to be what you normally have in your pockets you can pack specifically for this event, The rub is.. that everything you use has to fit in to the pockets of a standard pair of Non cargo style pants.. (say blue heans for example) and the only knife you can use is a folder..
So if you can fit enough cordage in your pocket. or a way to purify water, than go for it.

The tasks do not have to be accomplished the same day... However wait to post pics until all tasks are complete. so they will all be in one post.

Does a paracord belt worn in the beltloops of jeans count? That gives me around 90 feet of rope for shelter building (basically one of the reasons I made it and wear it.)

In the spirit of the contest I'm going to have to limit supplies to what you can carry in your pockets.. nothing to say you can;t roll up a hank of cordage and throw it in there though.

not entering the contest, as I wear only cargos.... and the only knife I'm carrying lately is a Case Peanut! interested to see how this plays out though...

as I wear only cargos....

Me too! I don't wear jeans. When i'm at work/meeting clients i wear business attire, otherwise it's cargo's or cords (which also have cargo pockets). However, i always EDC my Swiss Huntsman.

I don't think you guys are getting this. RR will correct me if I am wrong, but It doesn't matter if you don't wear jeans, just put the stuff in the regular pockets and don't use the cargo pockets. (He mentions jeans just because it levels the playing field with 4 standard pockets, 2 on the side and 2 in the back.)

This is the way I understood it...

Correct Guys... That is what I meant... If stuffed the pockets of a full blown pair of cargos it woldn;t be much of a challenge would it? LOL.. but perhaps that's one for later... the exercise is not fashion specific. you can wear any standard pants, but the only items you can use have to fit in the front 2 pockets.

Hey RR, mewolf's kid here. Had a lot of fun with this challenge and I'm lookin forward to what everyone thinks. Workin on gettin my own gold so hopefully you guys see some more of me (eye4steel).
Most of the goods. All I ended up adding later was a copper pocket pot and some sunflower seeds.

Took two tries but made fire with small pieces of burlap, ties of newspaper, and the "striker". Never did use the matches.

Carving out the cave. I did use a steel shovel to add more snow for time's sake but what you saw before was entirely the poncho shovel. I mostly used a larger stick of about 2 inches for carvingout though.

The Signal system came from using the pine bows around the fire and a bunch of extra tinder I had to throw on the fire immediately.

What a great idea! I'd love to participate, but damn February being a short month means I'll be watching from the sidelines most likely.

Filled er with white pine and some spruce for insulation as well as put the second poncho down for just that little extra. Didn't bother makin it much bigger than what I could squeeze into cause no one needs an ice palace when they're lookin to survive, but I did have some room if a had needed to fit a small pack in with me.

Simple snares and my first ever figure 4 at the mouth of a small rodent hole. Had to try and keep the snares in place with small twigs and the like seeings how I didn't have any snare wire to work with. Everything was baited with the last couple handfuls of sunflower seeds I ended up just stuffing in my pockets.
